ITHACA, N.Y. — With five of singles matches going to a third set, the 52nd-ranked men's tennis team came out on top of a 6-1 decision against St. John's on Wednesday at Reis Tennis Center. The victory pushes the Big Red to 7-5 on the season.
The Big Red started the day by winning the doubles point for a fourth consecutive match. Just as in last weekend's sweep of Binghamton, the top two pairings rendered the No. 3 match irrelevant by winning convincingly. Senior
Sam Fleck teamed with sophomore
Colin Sinclair to win 6-2 at the No. 2 position, and sophomores
Bernardo Casares Rosa and
Chris Vrabel took down the nation's 49th-ranked doubles team, Lucas Hehjal and Vaidik Munshaw, by a 6-3 margin in the No. 1 match.
A wild back-and-forth singles session ensued, with the only straight-set victory belonging to Vrabel at the No. 5 position to provide Cornell with a 2-0 lead. All of the other matches featured at least 10 games in the first set, St. John's winning three of them with a seventh game. The decisive third sets were also down to the wire, with the Big Red's top three — Fleck, junior
Stefan Vinti and Casares Rosa — winning by either 7-5 or 7-6 margins. Like Fleck, sophomore
Dylan Brown fought off a first-set loss to rally for a victory three sets at the No. 6 spot.
The Big Red improved to 15-1 all-time against St. John's, including a perfect 4-0 record in the tenure of
Silviu Tanasoiu, the Director of Intercollegiate Tennis and Savitt-Weiss Head Coach of Men's Tennis.
