BINGHAMTON, N.Y. — With just two weeks remaining before the start of the Ivy League season, the men's tennis team returns to action at 5 p.m. Saturday with a match against Binghamton at the Binghamton Tennis Center.
Cornell (5-5) is coming off a 5-2 victory over Old Dominion on Feb. 27 in its last match, marking the third time this season it has defeated a team that is currently ranked in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Top 75. The Big Red shot up 12 spots to 46th in the rankings last week before sliding back to 50th after remaining idle last weekend. Sophomore
Bernardo Casares Rosa improved to 4-0 from the No. 3 singles position in his victory against the Monarchs' Michael Weindl, and classmates
Colin Sinclair and
Chris Vrabel are tied for the team lead in singles victories with six apiece. The Big Red has 19 of its 26 singles victories from the 3-4-5 positions, and it's also 30-22 in doubles play.
Binghamton (2-9) is on a nine-match losing streak since it opened the dual season with victories against Bryant and Marist on Jan. 24 at Turning Stone Resort Casino in Verona. Four of those losses have come against Ivy League foes, including a 7-0 affair last Sunday at Princeton. Junior Eliott Hureau has a team-best 5-5 record in singles, all from the No. 3 spot. He also teams with senior Robin Lesage to form a No. 2 doubles team with a 6-3 record. Lesage (3-8) primarily competes at No. 2 in singles, with junior Sid Hazarika (4-7) most often occupying the top position.
The Big Red is 23-3 all-time against Binghamton, including a 7-0 victory in the teams' last meeting on March 3, 2013 at Reis Tennis Center in Ithaca.
