Baseball Suffers 9-2 Loss at Siena

Box Score (PDF)

LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. — Freshman Dale Wickham drove in two runs with a pinch-hit single in the eighth inning, but that was all the offense the baseball team could muster on Tuesday in a 9-2 loss to Siena in a non-league game at Siena Field.

Siena (8-19) blew the game open with four runs in the fifth inning, with the lead eventually ballooning to eight runs after seven innings. Saints starter Rick Morales allowed just three Big Red batters to reach in his six innings of work — but one was caught stealing in the second inning, and another was picked off in the fourth.

Senior starter Nick Busto took the loss despite surrendering just one run in three innings — the fewest of the Big Red's four pitchers. Siena's big fifth inning could have done more damage if not for junior Ryne Veenema's emergence out of the bullpen leading to a groundout that stranded the bases loaded.

After Siena tacked on three more runs in the sixth and seventh innings, Cornell started to get its offensive wheels rolling while sending five consecutive pinch hitters to the plate in the eighth. Freshman Ellis Bitar led off with a base hit into center, then junior Jordan Winawer and junior pinch hitter Eliot Lowell drew walks to load the bases. Wickham later pulled a two-run single into right field to get the Big Red on the board. Wickham now has four RBIs in his last three games.

The game was played in honor of Courtney Erickson '93, a longtime friend to both the Cornell and Siena communities, who always dreamed of having the schools' baseball teams play their annual series at historic Doubleday Field in Cooperstown. The game had to be moved to Siena because of inadequate field conditions at Doubleday Field, but the teams plan to play a 2016 doubleheader in Cooperstown. Erickson passed away July 5, 2013 after a courageous battle with pancreatic and liver cancer. Erickson's nephew, James, threw out the ceremonial first pitch, and his father, Jack, brother, Phil, and sister-in-law, Sarah, were in attendance.

Cornell is scheduled to return to Ivy League play this weekend with a four-game series against defending champion Columbia. The series will be played in the form of two doubleheaders, starting at noon on both Saturday and Sunday. All four games will be broadcast on the Ivy League Digital Network.
