Blasts, Alumnae Make Special Saturday For Softball

ITHACA, N.Y. – Head coach Dick Blood will have a dugout full of memories from his final weekend on the job, though it may be hard to pick out his favorite. He could choose the more than three dozen alumni who returned to thank him for all they have done for them, or the way they gathered together to have their photo taken with him after Saturday's doubleheader.

He might choose freshman Tori Togashi's game-tying three-run home run in the seventh inning to extend game two to extras. That was just two innings after stepping out of the third base coaches box to remind her about keeping her head up after pulling off on a ball.

Most of the couple hundred in attendance would likely pick for him the ping of Michiko McGivney's eighth-inning home run off the rightfield foul pole to give the Big Red a 10-7 walk-off win, giving the Big Red mentor a 621st career victory.

Cornell split a Saturday afternoon doubleheader with Princeton, dropping game one 6-3 before a late comeback sent the Big Red into an epic celebration in the nightcap.

Game One
Shanna Christian scattered seven hits and struck out eight in picking up a complete game victory over the Big Red in the opener.

Chloe Pendergast was 3-for-3 with a double for a Big Red offense that was limited to seven hits in the loss. Three of the hits came in the two-run second that evened the game, including a run-scoring single by Leanne Iannucci.

Maddie Orcutt took the loss despite flashes of brilliance. The freshman struck out five batters with just one walk, allowing five earned runs to fall to 9-11.

Princeton scored two runs in the second, third and sixth innings to claim the win. Alyssa Schmidt was 2-for-4 with a triple and two RBI, while Skye Jerpbak had a pair of doubles. Marissa Reynolds had a pair of hits, including her fourth home run of the season.

Game Two
Togashi and McGivney hit the long balls, but were far from the only contributors to one of the team's signature wins. Junior Meg Parker was 5-for-5, just the seventh five-hit game in program history, with two doubles and three runs scored. McGivney was 2-for-4 with four RBI and two runs scored and Rebecca Kubena was 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Freshman Maddie Orcutt was outstanding out of the bullpen, surrendering one hit over the final 2.2 innings to pick up the win, her 10th of the season.

Princeton had leads of 3-0, 6-3 and 7-4, but each time the Big Red fought back. It wasn't until the bottom half of the seventh that the light truly came on. Down three runs, Parker led off with a double, followed by a McGivney single. Togashi took a 1-2 pitch over the right-centerfield fence and drove the crowd into a frenzy, all the while giving new life to a team that had been struggling all afternoon.

After Orcutt put down the Tigers in order in the top of the eighth, Cornell used some two-out magic. Kubena singled to open the inning, but two batters later she remained at first. Parker kept the inning going with a single to left before McGivney took a 1-2 pitch and pulled it down the first base line. It hit three-quarters of the way off the pole, triggering a celebration unlike any seen since the Big Red claimed its last Ivy League title on its field back in 2010.

The Big Red and the Tigers will close out Ivy League play on Sunday, April 26 at 12:30 p.m.
