ITHACA, N.Y. -- Going head-to-head with Cornell's biggest rival, Princeton, in his final Ivy League weekend, head coach
Dick Blood would expect nothing less than four highly-charged, competitive games. That's exactly what he got.
On Senior Day, Cornell's two seniors each made contributions to a winning game one against Cornell's longtime rival, taking a 7-5 victory on Sunday afternoon at Niemand*Robison Field. Game two came down to the wire, and the Tigers snuffed out a seventh-inning Big Red rally to claim a 3-1 win in a battle between two pitchers who held all the cards.
The split moved Cornell's record to 16-23 (8-12 Ivy), while Princeton ended the weekend 18-24 (10-9 Ivy). Cornell will close out its 2015 campaign on Tuesday, April 28 at 3:30 p.m. for a home doubleheader with Binghamton.
Game OneCornell's six-run fourth inning put the Big Red into the lead, and despite constant Princeton pressure, that was enough for the 7-5 victory.
The Big Red piled up 13 hits in the win, with both
Michiko McGivney and
Megan Murray posting three apiece. The seniors each contributed to the big rally on Senior Day, with
Sophie Giaquinto hitting a single, one of her two hits on the day, and
Clare Feely walking with the bases loaded for the first run of the game for Cornell after the Tigers jumped out to a 2-0 lead. Cornell had five hits and took advantage of a Princeton error to complete the big inning.
Freshman pitcher
Sierra Stone had a strong outing in picking up her second win of the season. Stone scattered 11 hits in her 5.1 innings of work to improve to 2-6, while classmate
Maddie Orcutt picked up her first career save with 1.2 innings of solid relief to close it out.
Meg Parker, who had six straight hits to close her day on Saturday, singled in the first to make it seven consecutive at bats with a hit and ended the contest 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI.
Game TwoPrinceton senior Meredith Brown went pitch-for-pitch with Cornell rookie star
Maddie Orcutt, allowing just four hits and no earned runs in five innings of work to pick up her fourth win of the year, while Erica Nori surrendered an unearned run in the seventh but staved off a Big Red rally in the final frame for the 3-1 Tiger win.
Orcutt was every bit as good over her seven innings of work, scattering seven hits and three runs while striking out two, but the Big Red couldn't get the offense going all afternoon and had just five hits in the loss.
Tori Togashi had two hits and scored the lone run of the contest as part of a furious seventh-inning rally.
After Togashi opened the frame with a solid single and
Chloe Pendergast reached on an error with no one out, Cornell was victimized by a close call at second on a fielder's choice that went Princeton's way, giving the Big Red runners on first and third with one out. Togashi scored on a wild pitch to cut the deficit to 3-1, but a ground ball out and a flyout on a nice sliding catch ended the game, giving Princeton the split.
