QUEENS, N.Y. – The Big Red volleyball team was back in action this morning at the 2015 Jack Kaiser Volleyball Classic at St. John's University, falling to the host Red Storm, 3-1. Cornell (2-4) wraps up the tournament this afternoon when it takes on George Mason at 3 p.m.
St. John's (8-2) jumped out to a quick two-set lead, winning 25-17 and 25-19, before the Big Red took the third set, 25-21. The Red Storm sealed the win with a 25-21 victory in the fourth set.
Cornell hit a solid .286 for the match, with
Macey Wilson and
Alyssa Phelps both hitting north of .500. Wilson led the team with 12 kills and just one error on 20 attempts for a .550 hitting percentage, while Phelps connected on 11-of-18 with just two errors for a .500 hitting percentage. Phelps also handed out 15 assists. Freshman setter
Lauren Donnelly saw her first significant playing time and finished with 29 assists, while classmates
Natalie Danenhauer and
Shae Bauchens tallied eight digs apiece.
The Red Storm was led by Margherita Bianchin's 20 kills and three errors on 37 attempts (.459), while Karin Palgutova registered 17 kills and three errors on 26 swings (.538). Those two powered St. John's to a .385 hitting percentage as a team. Deniz Mutlugil finished with 44 assists and a match-high 11 digs, while Delaney D'Amore tallied 10 digs.
