THE MATCHUP: The Big Red volleyball team is off to its best start since 2007 and will travel to St. John's 2015 Jack Kaiser Volleyball Classic  this weekend to face San Francisco on Friday, Sept. 11 at 2 p.m., before taking on Central Connecticut at 4:30p.m. The next morning, Cornell will take on the Red Storm at 10 a.m., before closing the tournament against George Mason at 3 p.m. The Big Red's games vs. San Francisco, St. John's and George Mason will take place in Taffner Field House, while the game against Central Connecticut will take place in Carnesecca Arena … Of the four opponents, Cornell holds a winning record against only CCSU (4-1). The series with George Mason is tied at 2-2, while both San Francisco and St. John's hold the 2-0 advantage.
 
SEASON OPENERS: With its win over William & Mary on Sept. 5, Cornell improved to 28-14-1 all-time in season openers. Since 1995, the Big Red is an impressive 15-5 in the first match of the season.


THE SERIES VS. SAN FRANCISCO:  Cornell has played San Francisco twice in program history, coming in back-to-back meetings in 2006-07. The Dons have won both meetings in the series, including a 3-0 victory in 2007.
 
VS. THE WEST COAST CONFERENCE: Cornell is 1-5 all-time vs. the current members of the WCC, with its lone victory coming vs. Portland (1-1). The Big Red is 0-2 all-time vs. Saint Mary's (CA) and San Francisco, but has never played BYU, Gonzaga,  Loyola Marymount, Pacific, Pepperdine, San Diego, or Santa Clara.  

THE SERIES VS. CENTRAL CONNECTICUT: Cornell holds the 4-1 advantage over the Blue Devils. The teams first met in 1984, with the last meeting, a 3-1 Cornell victory, coming in 2012. Central Connecticut earned its lone victory in the series at the 1996 Cornell Invitational.
 
VS. THE NORTHEAST CONFERENCE:  Cornell is 31-11 against the current members of the Northeast Conference. The Big Red has a winning record against Central Connecticut (4-1), Fairleigh Dickinson (11-2), St. Francis (NY) (2-0), and St. Francis (PA) (10-1). Cornell has a losing record against LIU Brooklyn (2-4) and Robert Morris (2-3) and never faced Bryant or Sacred Heart in volleyball.

THE SERIES VS. ST. JOHN'S: The Red Storm holds a 2-0 lead in the series with Cornell, winning the first outing in 2006, before earning a 3-0 victory in 2009. Both St. John's victories came during the Cornell Invitational. 
 
VS. THE BIG EAST: Cornell is 7-9 all-time vs. the current members of the Big East. The Big Red holds a winning record against just Butler (1-0), while the series with Providence (1-1),) and Villanova (2-2) are all tied. Cornell has a losing record against Georgetown (1-2), Seton Hall (2-3, and St. John's (0-2) but has never faced Creighton, DePaul, Marquette, or Xavier in volleyball.
 
THE SERIES VS. GEORGE MASON: The Big Red first played George Mason in 1989 and the teams have split four games over a 20-year span with the last meeting going to the Patriots, a 3-1 victory in 2009.
 
VS. THE ATLANTIC 10: Cornell is 12-8 all-time against the current members of the Atlantic 10. The Big Red is a perfect 3-0 against both Duquesne and La Salle. Cornell also has a winning record against Davidson (1-0) Fordham (2-1), Dayton (0-1) and George Washington (0-3). The series with George Mason (2-2) and VCU (1-1) are tied and the Big Red has never faced Rhode Island, or Saint Louis in volleyball.

THE HEAD COACH: Trudy Vande Berg is in her first season as The Wendy Schaenen '79 Head Coach Of Volleyball at Cornell (2-1, .667) ... Vande Berg became the 11th head coach in Cornell volleyball history in March 2015 after spending three seasons as the Big Red's top assistant coach ... Prior to her time at Cornell, Vande Berg spent time as an assistant coach at North Florida, Duke, and Iowa State and as a volunteer assistant at Wisconsin. She also served as head coach of the Team Iowa Ice professional club in the Premier Volleyball League, where she guided the team to the championship in her second year at the helm. Ice is the only team to have medaled in each of the three years of the league's existence.
 
ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM:  Junior Alyssa Phelps and Freshman Carla Sganderlla were both named to the Black Knights Invitational All-Tournament Team. 
 
OPENING UP 2-0: Cornell picked up wins over William & Mary and Iona on its first day of the season to get off to a 2-0 start for the first time since defeating Niagara and Bucknell in the opening round of the 2007 Cornell Invitational.

SETTING UP: Junior Alyssa Phelps currently sits in ninth place in Cornell history for career assists (1,789), needing 63 more to move past Hilary Holland (2005-08) and into eighth place.
 
BIG BLOCKER: Junior Macey Wilson ranks 17th in Cornell history for career solo blocks (29), needing just seven more to move past Joanna Weiss in 16th place. She is also 18th in block assists (158), and 20th in total blocks (187), needing 16 and 10, respectively, to move up a notch.

NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK: The Big Red freshmen class of Alex BaslerShae BauchensNatalie DanenhauerLauren Donnelly, Gabby GoodallZoe LequeuxKara Rogers, and Carla Sganderlla was ranked among the top 90 in the nation, earning a high honorable mention distinction from PrepVolleyball.com.
 
UP NEXT: The Cornell Invitational returns the weekend of Sept. 18-19, beginning with the Big Red's home opener vs. Binghamton on Friday evening at 7 p.m. The following day, Cornell takes on Seton Hall and Loyola Chicago. The Big Red has a dominating 21-8-2 record all-time vs. the Bearcats, while the series is tied at 2-2 with the Pirates. Cornell has never faced the Ramblers in volleyball.
