Morgan's Freshman Scoring Record Gives Men's Hoops Win At Harvard

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- Cornell freshman Matt Morgan scored a school freshman record 33 points and junior Darryl Smith joined him in making a number of key plays down the stretch, but it was an unlikely hero whose first career 3-pointer after 75 games sent the Big Red home with a 77-65 win over five-time defending Ivy champion Harvard on Friday evening at Lavietes Pavilion. The Big Red improved to 8-9 (1-2 Ivy), while the Crimson slipped to 9-10 (1-2 Ivy).

Junior center David Onuorah's first points of the night came on an unlikely 3-pointer, beating the buzzer from the left wing after an inbounds pass found the only open Big Red player with just under two minutes to play, pushing a tenuous two-point Big Red edge to five and highlighting a game-ending 13-0 run.

Morgan hit 8-of-19 shots from the floor overall, including 5-of-12 from 3-point range, and connected on 12-of-13 free throws while adding five rebounds, three assists, three steals and no turnovers in 37 minutes of action. Smith chipped in 12 points with seven rebounds, two steals and a pair of blocked shots. Freshman Troy Whiteside had nine points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals and JoJo Fallas notched six points and four boards. In all, Cornell turned the ball over just nine times, forced 15 turnovers and hit 10 3-pointers against the bigger Crimson.

Zena Edosomwan had 24 points, 10 rebounds and a pair of blocks to go with an assortment of powerful dunks. Tommy McCarthy chipped in with 16 points, eight assists and six rebounds, but also was charged with six turnovers. Corey Johnson had 15 points and eight boards, as only five different players scored for the Crimson. Harvard dominated the glass (51-34) and had a 42-20 scoring edge in the paint, but were limited to 5-of-19 shooting from beyond the arc and made just 6-of-17 free throws.

Watching the first five minutes of either half might have made it hard to envision the final score. The Crimson used its size to pound Cornell inside, jumping out to a 10-2 lead and forcing the Big Red into 1-of-12 shooting to open the game - the one make coming on a goaltending call. The second half began with a 25-6 Harvard run. But in between and after, Cornell's quickness, scrappiness on defense and fearless play ruled the day.

Trailing 20-19 with a little over six minutes to play in the first half, Cornell ripped off a 21-5 run of its own to take control of the game - or so it seemed. A 3-pointer by Fallas gave the Big Red the lead and triggered a 9-0 spurt that ended with five consecutive points by Wil Bathurst.A three-point play by Troy Whiteside, a second 3-pointer by Fallas and a scoop layup by Morgan at the buzzer sent Cornell into halftime leading 40-25.

Edosomwan led Harvard's second half charge all the way back, scoring 10 points in the first nine minutes and directly leading to another 3-point basket after an offensive rebound. A 3-pointer by McCarthy after another Edosomwan offensive board gave the Crimson a 50-46 lead with 11 minutes left in regulation.

From there, five more ties and seven lead changes kept the crowd in the game as the two teams continued to answer every made shot. Morgan served as the de facto closer with 11 points in the final 5:17, including 3-pointers on consecutive possessions, Smith blocked a shot and soared for a key defensive rebound and had a run-out dunk in the final minute to seal the deal, all coming moments after Onuorah's 3-pointer.

• After getting a pair of stops on the defensive end, Jordan Abdur-Ra'oof's challenge of Edosomwan was blocked out of bounds with two seconds left on the shot clock and 158 left on the game clock.
• Whiteside inbounded underneath the basket and looked for Morgan, then Abdur-Ra'oof before settling on Onuorah at the left wing.
