LeDuc Hits Buzzer-Beater, But Harvard Tops WBKB In Overtime

Box Score (coming soon)

ITHACA, N.Y. --- Junior Megan LeDuc hit a buzzer-beater three-pointer to send the game to overtime after Cornell women's basketball battled back from a 13-point deficit, but Harvard came away with a 65-56 overtime victory Friday night in Newman Arena.

LeDuc and junior Nia Marshall each finished with 17 points. Marshall shot 58.3 percent from the field and chipped in six rebounds to lead the Big Red.

Kit Metoyer led the Crimson with 26 points, going 6-for-11 from beyond the arc.

Harvard opened the scoring with Metoyer knocking down a quick three-pointer and Madeline Raster adding a pair of free throws to give the Crimson an early 5-0 lead. Junior Nia Marshall's layup got the Big Red (10-7, 2-1 Ivy League) on the board with 7:20 remaining in the first quarter before classmate Nicholle Aston banked a shot off the glass to cut Harvard's lead to one.

After the Crimson (7-9, 2-1 Ivy League) had pulled ahead, 7-4, reigning Ivy League Rookie of the Week Caroline Shelquist knocked down a three midway through the first frame to bring Cornell even. She added another just moments later, giving the Big Red its first lead of the night, 12-11.

LeDuc chipped in a trey of her own to earn a 17-13 advantage at the end of the first quarter.

Sophomore Marissa Knox connected with LeDuc to take a 19-15 lead early in the second, but Metoyer's second three of the night brought the Crimson back within one with 7:01 remaining in the half.

Marshall hit a jumper from just inside the key with 3:08 to go in the quarter, pushing Cornell's lead to 21-18, but once again Metoyer had the answer from beyond the arc, sparking a 12-0 run to give the Crimson a 30-21 advantage at halftime.

Marshall cut into Harvard's lead with a pair of jumpers early in the third quarter, but AnnMarie Healy matched her, to put the Crimson up, 34-25, about four minutes into the half. Metoyer added two more treys for a 13-point Harvard lead, the largest of the game. Marshall and LeDuc each made a free throw and sophomore Christine Ehland went 2-for-2 from the stripe, but the Crimson took a 42-31 advantage into the final frame.

The Big Red began chipping away early in the fourth quarter with jumpers from Aston and senior Maddie Campbell and a three-pointer from LeDuc. On defense, Campbell came up with a steal, and Marshall drew a foul on the ensuing possession, knocking down the free throw to complete a three-point play and bring the Big Red to within one, 42-41.

Metoyer added five more points to push Harvard's lead back to six with just over 3:30 to go, but LeDuc came back with a three of her own. Moments later, LeDuc found Campbell under the basket, and Campbell once again made it a one-point game with Harvard leading 48-47 with just over two minutes left.

Healy made two free throws at the other end, but Metoyer missed a shot from three, and junior Kerri Moran pulled down the rebound before a layup from Aston made it 50-49 with 43.7 seconds to go.  Cornell called a timeout and Harvard then immediately called its own to advance the ball. Healy's jumper with 28 seconds left didn't fall, and the Big Red took its second timeout.

Out of the timeout, LeDuc tried for a three but hit the rim, and the battle for the rebound resulted in a foul on Cornell. Shilpa Tummala sunk both of her free throws, and the Big Red got the ball back with six seconds to go. As the buzzer sounded, LeDuc launched a three, and it fell, knotting the score at 52 and sending the game to overtime.

Moran went 2-for-2 from the line to open the extra frame to give Cornell its first lead since the second quarter. A jumper, a pair of free throws and an assist from Metoyer put the Crimson in front once again, 58-54.

The Big Red defense forced Harvard to run out the shot clock, and, after the Crimson had stolen the ball back, Marshall drew an offensive foul to regain possession. Cornell sent Tummala to the line twice, and she made all four free throws to give Harvard a 62-54 lead. LeDuc pulled two back, but Tummala sunk two more from the line and Destiny Nunley went 1-for-2, and the Crimson ran out the clock for the 65-56 overtime victory.

Cornell returns to action at 6 p.m. Saturday night in Newman Arena to take on Dartmouth. The game will be simulcast on the Ivy League Digital Network and ESPN3.
