Comeback Comes Up Short As Women’s Basketball Falls To Towson

TOWSON, Md. – After trailing for the majority of the game, the Big Red women's basketball team managed to pull within one-point with 1:49 to play, but Towson outscored the visitors 6-2 down the stretch to hand Cornell its first loss of the season, 68-63. The Tigers' final six points were scored by Raven Bankston, who finished with a game-high 30 points.

Megan LeDuc and Taylor DePalma combined for six 3-pointers (6-of-12) as LeDuc tallied a team-high 15 points, while DePalma finished with a career-high 13 points. Nicholle Aston also chipped in 13 points and fellow forward Nia Marshall registered nine points and a game-high nine rebounds. Kerri Moran also had nine points and handed out six assists prior to fouling out late in the game as Cornell was forced to foul.

Towson (3-0) shot 49 percent (25-51), with Bankston connecting on 10-of-18 shots. Her twin sister, Raine Bankson, hit 3-of-5 for 10 points and Sianni Martin chipped in 11.

Cornell (3-1) made just 37.3 percent of its shots overall (22-59), but was 43.8 percent from beyond the arc. The Big Red grabbed one more rebound than the home team (33-32) and assisted on 14-of-22 baskets.

Both teams finished with 17 turnovers.

Towson led for nearly the entire contest, but the game was incredibly close throughout the first three quarters, with Cornell keeping within five points the entire time.

The Tigers then opened the fourth quarter on an 8-3 run to go up by nine points (58-49) with 5:29 to play. Less than two minutes later, the home team pushed its lead to double-digits (62-52), but back-to-back treys from LeDuc and Moran opened up a 9-0 Cornell run, which was capped by a free throw from DePalma and a layup from Aston, to bring the visitors within one-point (62-61) with 1:49 remaining in the contest.

Raven Bankston knocked down a trey on Towson's next trip down the court and then hit a pair of free throws to push the Tigers' lead to 67-61. On the home team's next possession, LeDuc came up with a steal and hit Moran for a jumper to make it a four-point game with 43 ticks left on the clock, but Cornell would not score again as Towson took the 68-63 victory.

The Big Red returns to Ithaca to take on Howard University on Tuesday, Nov. 22 at 7 p.m. Cornell will look to avenge last season's 76-74 loss to the Bison.
