ITHACA, N.Y. — The women's tennis team split its singles matches with West Virginia, but the Mountaineers won the doubles point to start the day and held on for a 4-3 victory in a non-league match on Saturday at Reis Tennis Center.
Sophomore
Lizzie Stewart won her team-best seventh singles match of the season for Cornell (5-5), competing at the No. 3 position. Freshman
Michelle Wang rolled to her win at the No. 6 spot, improving to 4-0 on the season. Senior
Jane Stewart won the final match of the day to reach completion in a pair of close sets at No. 4.
In doubles, the tandem of sophomore
Madison Stevens and freshman
Mariko Iinuma didn't drop a single game in their victory at No. 3. That moves the pair to 5-2 on the season, but West Virginia (6-3) won the top two doubles matches to secure the day's opening point.
The Big Red continues its stretch of 11 straight non-league matches at home next weekend, when it hosts UMBC at 10 a.m. Saturday and St. John's at noon Sunday.
