NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Junior
Rachel Scherman rallied for a five-set victory at the No. 2 position to clinch a 6-3 victory for the women's squash team over Columbia in the seventh-place match of the Howe Cup on Sunday morning at Brady Squash Center.
With the win, Cornell (10-9) locked up its ninth winning season over the last 10 years under the direction of head coach
Julee Devoy. The Big Red has now also finished sixth or seventh in the nation in each of the last eight seasons.
Cornell got off to a strong start by sweeping the opening rotation, starting with three-set victories from freshmen
Hannah Scherl (No. 9) and
Nghi Nguyen (No. 6). Sophomore
Margaux Losty came back to win her match at No. 3 in four sets, and the Big Red was suddenly out to a 3-0 lead.
Freshman
Lauren Leizman followed up with another three-set victory at No. 8, and the other two matches in the middle rotation went to five sets. While Columbia got on the board at No. 5, Scherman won the last two sets in her match to give Cornell its fifth point and avenge a 5-4 loss to the Lions in January.
Senior co-captain
Reut Odinak also won in three sets at No. 7, punctuating the Big Red's dominance in the bottom half of the order.
