Big Innings Doom Softball At Saint Francis (Pa.)

LORETTO, Pa. -- Saint Francis (Pa.) Used big innings in both ends of a doubleheader to collect a pair of 12-4, six-inning victories over Cornell on Saturday afternoon at Red Flash Field. The Big Red slipped to 0-7 on the young season, while the Red Flash improved to 11-12.

The home team used innings of five and four runs in the opener and three four-run innings in the nightcap to sweep the first two of a three-game series against the Big Red. Cornell scored eight runs and collected 14 hits (including four home runs) in the two games, but could not keep Saint Francis at bay.

Both Emily Weinberg and Meg Parker had three hits apiece in the two contests, with Weinberg adding two runs scored and Parker driving in two with a home run in the opener, staking the Big Red to a 2-0 lead. Cornell hit three homers in game two, one each by Megan Murray, Tori Togashi and Olivia May, but Saint Francispounded out 12 hits, including five extra-base knocks, in ending both games an inning early.

In game one, Parker got Cornell out to a 2-0 lead with a two-run shot in the first, but Saint Francis answered with five runs in the bottom half of the inning and never trailed again. The Big Red fought back to within 5-3, then 7-4, but the Red Flash scored four in the sixth to end the game.

Maddie Orcutt went the distance, striking out four and allowing six walks and hitting five others to fall to 0-3 in the circle on the season.

Game two saw Saint Francis jump out to a 4-0 lead after two innings, only to see the Big Red homer three times in the third, including back-to-back shots by Murray and Togashi, to tie it at 4-4. Saint Francis roared back with four of its own in the bottom of the inning to take the lead back, then four more in the sixth to end the contest.
