Ithaca, N.Y. - The Big Red defeated the University of Connecticut Huskies 23-9 on Friday night in Game 4 of the Northeast Intercollegiate Regional.
UConn scored within the first 15 seconds of play but Cornell's Ignacio Masias responded with two goals to edge the Big Red to a 2-1 lead. The Huskies then tied the score at two. Cornell's starting trio of Masias,
Ryan Saul, and
Dan Shaw fired back to end the chukker 8-2 in favor of the Red.
The Big Red tallied the first five goals of the second to open up a 13-2 lead. UConn fought back to score the last three goals of the chukker to make it 13-5 Cornell at the half.
The Huskies opened the third with two more goals to narrow the gap to 13-7. Cornell then responded with four goals to make it a 17-7 Cornell lead after three.
Cornell continued their strong play into the fourth to earn the 23-9 win. Masias ended the night with 18 goals, Saul added three, and Shaw contributed two.
The Big Red face Western Ontario University on Sunday at 12:00 p.m. in the finals at Oxley Equestrian Center.
