ITHACA, N.Y. — The women's tennis team will enter the Ivy League season on a roll after a 7-0 victory over Binghamton on Sunday afternoon at Reis Tennis Center. With 11 non-league victories, Cornell tied a program record that was achieved twice before (2001 and 2013).
After starting off by winning the top two doubles matches to take an early lead, the Big Red won each of the day's six singles matches in straight sets. Junior
Alexandra D'Ascenzo was the first to win from the No. 2 position, then senior
Jane Stewart closed her match at No. 6. Junior
Marika Cusick clinched the match with the easiest victory of the day, topping her opponent from the No. 1 spot, 6-1, 6-1.
The Big Red is now 16-2 all-time in the series against Binghamton, which includes a six-match winning streak since
Mike Stevens became the Carl H. Meinig '31 Head Coach of Women's Tennis.
Cornell (11-5) has won four straight matches by a 7-0 score and six straight overall. With an 11-match home stand in the rearview, the Big Red will hit the road for its first three Ivy League matches. That stretch starts at noon Saturday with a trip to 41st-ranked Columbia.
