WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Big Red softball team used three big innings full of timely hits and a pair of homers to sweep a doubleheader at George Washington on Tuesday afternoon. Cornell won game one 9-7 before taking game two 7-6 to improve to 3-11 on the year, including 3-1 in its last four games. The Colonials fell to 14-14 with the losses.
Game OneA pair of big innings, punctuated by
Leanne Iannucci's three-run homer in the top of the seventh, rallied the Big Red past the Colonials in game one.
Cornell jumped out to a 4-0 edge, watched as George Washington took the lead with a five-run answer and plated five in the seventh before holding off the home team for the team's second win of the season.
Meg Parker allowed just six hits and two earned runs in picking up her first win of the season in the cirle with the complete game and was also 1-for-3 with a walk, a run scored and an RBI at the plate.
Jessica Bigbie was 2-for-4 with three RBI and
Emily Weinberg was 1-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI.Â
Game TwoRebecca Kuben'a first inning grand slam staked Cornell to a lead it would never relinquish in the nightcap, racing out to a 7-2 lead and holding off the Colonials in the final three innings for the win.
Kubena was 2-for-4 with four RBI and two runs scored and
Megan Murray (2-for-4) and Bigbie (1-for-4) also scored twice.
Maddie Orcutt was the winner in the circle, striking out five in 6.1 innings of work to pick up her second win of the season.
Iannucci, who had the big hit in the first, added an insurance run in the fifth with a pinch-hit single that made it 7-2, giving the Big Red enough breathing room in the final three frames to sweep the doubleheader.Â
