Men's Track And Field Shows Well At IC4A Championships

Cornell men's track and field traveled to Boston University for the IC4A Championships this weekend, placing 13th as a team with 24 points, led by Bobby Plummer's triple jump victory, Mark Tedder's runner-up finish in the 3k, and Tobe Attah's bronze in the 400.  Hampton was the team champion with 66 points.

Plummer took a big win in the triple jump at 50'1.25" (15.27m), becoming the third male Cornellian to win the indoor event at IC4As and finishing with all six of his jumps over 15 meters. Freshman James Seaton gained valuable experience in 14th place (46'8", 14.22m).

In the 60 dash, sophomore Brailin Paulino ran 6.96 in the prelims and freshman Alex Beck ran 6.98 as both advanced to the semifinals, where Beck placed 14th in 6.96 and Paulino was 16th in 6.98.  Beck would return in the 200, running 21.69 in the prelims to advance to Sunday's final where he placed 11th in 21.72.  Paulino ran 21.93 in the prelims to place 19th.  Senior Max Hairston ran 8.24 in the prelims with the 12th-fastest time, leading freshman Austin Lyons (8.34, 21st) and junior Wynn Curtis (8.37, 22nd).

Junior Tobe Attah was marvelous in Saturday's 400 prelim, scorching 47.44 to move to No. 2 all-time in school history as sophomore Michael Smith ran 48.08 (No. 7 all-time).  In Sunday's final, Attah improved on his No. 2 all-time mark with a 47.21, third-place finish.  In the 500, sophomore James Smith placed 14th in the prelims at 1:04.52 as classmate Stanford Cooper was 20th in 1:05.90.

The 4x400 quartet of Michael Smith, James Smith, Max Hairston, and Tobe Attah ran a seasonal best 3:12.46 (No. 8 all-time) for the third-best time in the prelims, opting out of Sunday's final for health precaution with the outdoor season looming quickly on the horizon.

In the 800, freshman Matt McGowen hurdled a tangle of fallen runners and ran 1:53.25 for 20th place as sophomore Tim Boston set a personal best in 1:53.99 in 30th place and freshman Brandon Phillips ran 1:56.93.  Sophomore Chase Silverman was 21st in the mile prelims in 4:14.38.

In the final Cornell event of the meet - the men's 3k - junior Mark Tedder made a bold move to the front at 1600 (4:26 split), closing his last 1600 in 4:09.6 to place 2nd in 8:02.77 (No. 3 all-time), with kilometer splits of 2:46-2:43-2:33 and a last 400 of 57.7 seconds.
