ITHACA, N.Y. — Freshman
David Volfson defeated a nationally-ranked opponent in singles and also teamed with junior
Colin Sinclair to win the No. 1 doubles match, but the men's tennis team was defeated by Dartmouth, 4-2, on Sunday in an Ivy League match at Reis Tennis Center.
In a matchup of two teams who have narrowly missed securing at-large bids to the NCAA tournament in each of the last two seasons, 40th-ranked Dartmouth (13-8, 1-1 Ivy) wrestled away the doubles point. Volfson and Sinclair cruised to a 6-2 victory at the No. 1 spot, but the Big Green countered by winning the remaining matches in tiebreakers.
The visitors then won the first singles match to be completed before 56th-ranked Cornell (8-10, 1-2 Ivy) fought back to tie it at 2. Sinclair blanked his opponent in the second set at the No. 2 spot, then Volfson wrapped up a tidy straight-set victory over 81st-ranked Dovydas Sakinis at No. 1.
Even though Dartmouth was on the verge of wrapping up its third point with a three-set win at No. 6, Cornell was gaining steam in the last two matches — both of which it needed to win to take the match. Freshman
Karlo Lozic won the second set of his No. 5 match to force a third, and senior
Stefan Vinti was up a break in the second set of his match at No. 3. Vinti would go on to force a third set, but the Big Green clinched at No. 5.
Cornell travels to New England next weekend for Ivy League matches at 1 p.m. Saturday at Brown and 1 p.m. Sunday at Yale.
