Hortelano-Roig's European Title Caps Big Day For Track

ITHACA, N.Y. -- The month of July continues to provide amazing, world-class results for Cornell Track and Field. A European title and Spanish national record, a finals performance at the Canadian Trials and a finals bid at the U.S. Olympic Trials led the way.

In Amsterdam at the European Championships, Bruno Hortelano-Roig '14 established a new Spanish national record in the 200, running 20.39 in the semifinals. Later in the day he came back to claim Gold, winning the European Championships in 20.45 to become the European champion at 200 meters.

At the Canadian Olympic Trials in Edmonton, Taysia Radoslav '18 placed an impressive sixth in the 400 hurdles final, crossing the line in 57.63.  Next up, Radoslav will represent Team Canada at the NACAC U-23 Championships from July 15-17 in El Salvador.

At the United States Olympic Trials in Eugene, Ore., Morgan Uceny '07 continued to march purposefully toward another Olympic berth on Team USA in the women's 1,500 meters. She placed third in her semifinal heat, crossing the line in 4:11.64. Running a smart race, she moved purposefully up the field after 800 meters, took control of the race in moving to the lead with 250 to go, and comfortably came in the top three to advance easily to the finals (the top five automatically advanced). The finals are Sunday at 8:00 p.m. ET and a top three finish for Uceny will guarantee a second straight spot in Rio.

Garrett Huyler '09 also made his debut in the men's high jump. The two-time All-American was unable to clear a height in an event contested in very heavy rain; far from ideal in the high jump.

In addition, a special meet has been set up on Saturday afternoon in Monmouth, Ore. by USATF to try to help Rudy Winkler improve his position on the world descending list and increase his chances for an invitation from the IAAF to the Rio Olympics. Check back tomorrow for an update on his results.
