ITHACA, N.Y. — Junior forward Tess Pullano scored her first goal of the season to send the women's soccer team to overtime on Sunday afternoon, but the Big Red ultimately lost to Syracuse on a 95th-minute goal by Stephanie Skilton — her second strike of the game.

Pullano's goal came in the 63rd during the Big Red's resurgent second half. Senior midfielder Elizabeth Crowell served a ball on a deep free kick from the right flank, and sophomore defender Zoe McCormick kept the ball alive past the back post. Her header came toward the middle of the 6-yard box, where Pullano and a Syracuse defender sent the ball back in McCormick's direction. Once again, she headed the ball back toward the goal mouth and senior defender Kailey Joyce got her head to it before it bounced off the far post. That's where Pullano was able to finishing touch on the play, nudging the ball over the line with her right knee.

"I was asking our team to play a little more direct, because Syracuse was playing a high line and we wanted to try to get some balls behind people, and we encouraged the forwards to run at people and take a chance," head coach Patrick Farmer said. "I think they did that in the second half. So I was happy with that."

The goal pulled Cornell (2-1) even after a first half that started with promise, only to see Syracuse (4-1-1) take control. Eva Gordon sent Sydney Brackett on a run that ended with a slow, measured shot that clanked off the far post in the 31st minute. Less than a minute later, the Big Red had its best chance of the half when Crowell's cross was headed just wide of the far post by Joyce. But the Orange struck with less than four minutes left before halftime on Skilton's top-spin lob on a volley from the top of the 18-yard box, placed just over the extended hands of Cornell senior goalkeeper Kelsey Tierney and under the crossbar.

The Big Red had opportunities to net a winner after Pullano's goal. Crowell and junior forward Meera Dheer worked a give-and-go with about 14 remaining in the second half, only to see Crowell's shot from 15 yards scoot wide of the far post. One of many runs up the left side from junior forward Paige DeLoach ended with a toe poke from in tight that was smothered by Syracuse goalkeeper Courtney Brosnan.

"I actually told the coaching staff before the start of overtime that win, lose or draw, I was happy with this performance," Farmer said. "I think that we gained a lot from this performance, and I think it will show up (down the road)."

The Orange then took control in the overtime period. Cornell escaped one scramble when a shot from Opal Curless was cleared off the line by sophomore defender Grace Keller, but Skilton finished off another scramble with 5:59 to play in the first overtime period when her shot from 12 yards out caromed off a defender and into the upper left corner of the net.

The loss broke Cornell's 13-game unbeaten streak in non-league play dating back to a setback against St. Bonaventure in October 2014. The Big Red continues a demanding stretch of game at 7 p.m. Friday at Rutgers, which is currently ranked 12th in the country and was a national semifinalist in 2015.
