#8 Women's Hockey Skates To 2-2 Tie At Harvard

Box Score (PDF)

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The #8 women's hockey team scored two goals in the second period and senior goaltender Paula Voorheis made 30 saves to help the Big Red preserve a 2-2 tie against Harvard on Saturday afternoon at the Bright-Landry Hockey Center. Senior Kaitlin Doering scored for the third-straight game and junior Sarah Knee tallied her first goal of the season and the second multi-point game of her career.

The tie also gave the Big Red three points in the season series against the Crimson – the most for Cornell in the season series since earning four on two wins during the 2011-12 season.

Harvard maintained the early edge in play, outshooting the Big Red 8-4 in the first 10 minutes and limiting Cornell's chances going the other way. The Crimson was able to take a 1-0 lead at the 13:07 mark when Haley Mullins picked up a rebounded puck at the bottom of the left circle and lofted it into the top right corner of the net.

Cornell found some legs with the start of the second period, earning a power-play 1:28 into the period. Doering was ultimately able to capitalize on the man-up opportunity 90 seconds later when she picked up a rebound off of a shot from junior Sarah Knee and put it past Tissenbaum at the left post for her 50th career point.

Voorheis kept the Crimson attack at bay on two penalty kills in the middle frame and came up big twice, first on a long-range shot from the point that she kicked out with the left leg and then seconds later standing up Kat Hughes and combining with Knee to pull the trickling puck back from the goal line.

It was Knee that would give Cornell a 2-1 lead with 4:50 remaining in the second period. After sophomore After a shot from Brianna Veerman, Lenka Serdar worked hard to dig out the rebound, allowing Knee to swoop into the left circle and send the puck past Tissenbaum.

Cornell maintained the 2-1 lead until Harvard's Briana Mastel tipped in a power-play point shot from Ali Peper with 3:05 left on the clock to eventually send the game to overtime.

The Big Red and Crimson traded chances in the overtime period – and Voorheis made three key saves – with Cornell carrying the pressure late. Senior Hanna Bunton streaked down the left wing on more than one occasion and was pulled down on her final rush to earn a 16 second power-play but the buzzer sounded to end the game tied, 2-2.

Voorheis (6-5-2) finished with 30 saves for Cornell and Tissenbaum (2-8-2) had 28 down at the other end. Harvard held the final edge in shots on goal, 32-30.

Cornell moves to 14-6-3 overall and 10-3-3 in ECAC Hockey while Harvard goes to 3-15-3 and 3-10-3.

The Big Red will return to Lynah Rink next weekend on Friday and Saturday to face Union and Rensselaer, respectively.
