Box Score NEW HAVEN, CONN. – The Big Red field hockey team jumped out to a 3-0 lead over Yale and then held off a late Bulldog comeback attempt to escape Johnson Field with a 3-2 victory this afternoon. Cornell had three different goal scorers and
Maddie Henry made eight saves to give the Big Red its first Ivy League victory of the season.
Cornell (7-3, 1-2 Ivy) got on the board first when a penalty corner shot by
Kirsten Pienaar was turned away by Yale goalie Sydney Terroso, but the rebound found its way to
Grace Royer's stick and the freshman slipped the ball into the net for the first collegiate goal of her career at the 15:11 mark.
The 1-0 lead held until halftime and the Big Red tacked on a pair of goals in a 10 minute span to go up, 3-0 in the 55th minute.
The first goal of the series was an impressive individual effort from
Sam McILwrick, who carried the ball into the circle, turned her back to the goal to evade a defender, and then whipped back to her left and sent the ball through traffic into the far post.
Cornell then pushed the lead to 3-0 when
Katie Carlson sent a pass from the right sideline into the circle to
Krysten Mayers' stick. The ball popped slightly into the air and Mayers swatted it over a diving Terroso for the 39th goal of her career, coming within one of tying the school record.
Yale (5-5, 0-3) put some pressure on the Big Red with a penalty corner goal by Imogen Davies at the 65:28 mark and Mayers nearly tied the school record when she pulled Terroso off her line and had a shot on the empty net saved at the last second by a diving Jackie Kisa.
The Bulldogs managed to score once more on a penalty corner goal by Kisa with no time on the clock.
Each team finished with 17 shots. The Big Red held the slim edge in shots on goal (12-10), while Yale had the advantage in penalty corners (7-3).
The Big Red has a busy weekend on tap, beginning with a home game against Harvard on Saturday, Oct. 14 at noon, before it travels to instate rival Colgate the following day for a contest at 1 p.m.
