CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — The men's squash team started off the Hoehn Cup with an upset victory over Navy, 7-2, on Friday afternoon at Harvard's Murr Center.
Junior
Andy Muran completed a second-rotation sweep for the Big Red with a four-set victory at No. 2 to clinch the match.
"There were many lets and fiercely contested points, which made for a tough match," assistant coach Scott Denne said. "But Muran remained steady for the win in the fourth game in overtime, giving us the five matches we needed."
For good measure, the Big Red went on to win the three final matches — including five-set affairs from
Jordan Brail (No. 4) and
Harry Freeman (No. 1).
Cornell (7-10) entered the Hoehn Cup — which is the College Squash Association's 'B' Division national championship for teams ranked ninth through 16th in the country — ranked 14th. Navy (18-6) was seeded 11th, so the Big Red can finish no worse than 12th overall. Cornell is attempting to win the Hoehn Cup for the fourth time in program history (1993, 2006, 2007).
Cornell advances to the semifinals on Saturday, where it will meet 10th-ranked Princeton at 3 p.m. The Tigers survived a Friday quarterfinal against 15th-ranked Bates, 5-4, after the teams entered the final rotation tied at 3.
In Friday's other quarterfinal matches. No. 9 Dartmouth defeated No. 16 Franklin & Marshall, 8-1, and No. 13 George Washington topped No. 12 Western Ontario, 6-3.
All placement matches on Sunday will start between 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. The championship match will remain at Murr Center, while the 11th-place match is scheduled for Brooks School in North Andover, Mass.
SQUASHTV will continue to offer a free broadcast of the championships. The primary focus will be on the main court and subsequently the 'A' Division's Potter Cup, but additional cameras will cover action on some of Murr Center's other courts. The stream can be found at
