PRINCETON, N.J. — The women's squash team was handed a 9-0 loss by Penn on Friday afternoon in a quarterfinal match at the College Squash Association's Howe Cup. The seventh-seeded Big Red will next face rival Stanford in the consolation quarterfinals at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Princeton's Jadwin Gymnasium.
Cornell (8-7), which entered the championships ranked seventh in the nation to qualify for its ninth consecutive Howe Cup appearance, was also blanked by second-ranked Penn (12-1) in the teams' regular-season finale on Feb. 12. Friday's tilt took similar form, with Penn winning in the minimum three games in seven of nine matches. Sophomore
Nghi Nguyen (No. 6) and freshman
Lucy Martin (No. 8) were the only members of the Big Red to force a fourth game in their respective matches.
The loss sets up a highly anticipated rematch with sixth-ranked Stanford (6-7), which also lost in the Howe Cup quarterfinals on Friday afternoon, suffering a 9-0 defeat at the hands of third-ranked Trinity.
Though not in the same league, Cornell and Stanford have engaged in some of the Big Red's biggest matches over recent seasons. They have traditionally been neighbors in the national rankings — Cornell at No. 6 and Stanford at No. 7 from 2012 until the waning weeks of the 2014-15 season. Cornell is 11-5 all-time against Stanford, though the Cardinal won this year's regular-season match, 6-3, on Jan. 29 in New York.
SQUASHTV will continue to offer a free broadcast of the team championships. The primary focus will be on the main court, but additional cameras will cover action on some of the other courts. The stream can be found at
