Hot Goalie Thwarts Men’s Lacrosse At Hobart

GENEVA, N.Y. – Hobart senior goalie Jackson Brown made 18 saves to lead the Statesmen to a 16-8 victory this afternoon over the Cornell men's lacrosse team at Boswell Field in Geneva, N.Y. With the win, Hobart improves to 2-1 on the season and snaps a 12-game losing streak to the Big Red. The loss sends the Big Red to 0-2 on the season.

All eight of Cornell's goals came from just three players as freshman Connor Fletcher and senior Andrew Keith each finished with a hat-trick, while Jeff Teat chipped in two goals. Kason Tarbell and Zach Ward posted one assist apiece.

Goalie Christian Knight made 11 saves, moving into 11th place in Cornell history for saves in a career, and tallied an assist in the closing moments of the third quarter to round out the Big Red's scoring.

Four different players registered at least three points for Hobart, with Justin Scott and Max Romm scoring four goals apiece. Scott added one assists and Frank Brown matched Scott's game-high five points with three goals and two helpers.

Hobart took one more shot than the Big Red (45-44) and also had one more turnover (14-13), while Cornell won the ground ball battle (32-22), despite losing 16-of-26 face-offs. Both teams cleared the ball well despite tough weather conditions with the Big Red going 18-of-20, while Hobart cleared 23-of-26.

Cornell's man-down defense was outstanding, allowing just one goal on six Statesmen chances but the Big Red was unable to convert either of its two man-up opportunities.

TURNING POINT
After fighting back from a 3-0 deficit, Cornell knotted the game at 3-3 and had an outstanding chance to take its first lead of the day at the 11:17 mark of the second quarter, but a brilliant save on the doorstep by Brown kept Cornell at bay and moments later Tanner John returned the one-goal advantage to the Statesmen.

John's goal opened an 8-1 run for the home team over a span of just over 21 minutes. During the initial moments of the run, Cornell's man-down defense killed three Statesmen chances, including back-to-back 60-second opportunities, but a pair of Hobart goals in an 11-second span with just over two minutes to play in the half sent all the momentum to Hobart.

UP NEXT
The Big Red will play its first home game of the season on Saturday, March 4, when it welcomes the University of Albany to Schoellkopf Field for a contest at 1 p.m. The series with the Great Danes is tied at 2-2, as Albany has won two straight meetings.

NOTES TO KNOW
• The Hobart victory snaps a 12-game Big Red winning streak, the longest in the series by either team, and is the first by Hobart since a 12-10 victory in the 2004 season.
• The loss was the first-ever to the Statesmen by Cornell Head Coach Matt Kerwick, a 1990 Hobart graduate.
• Christian Knight's assist on Jeff Teat's goal with one second to play in the third quarter was the Big Red's first point by a goalie since Ted Lynch registered an assist vs. Colgate on April 13, 1993.
• Both Colton Rupp (eight games) and Clarke Petterson (seven games) had their point scoring streaks ended …Kason Tarbell now has the longest point scoring streak on the team, standing at four games dating back to the 2016 contest vs. Brown.
