NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Coming off a tough loss at Brown last evening, the Big Red women's basketball team responded in a big way, leading wire-to-wire and snapping a seven-game losing streak in New Haven to down Yale, 76-63. With the win, Cornell improves to 12-7 overall and 3-3 in Ivy League play.
The victory was a total team effort, with four Big Red finishing in double-figures.
Nia Marshall led the way with 18 points, moving into 24th place in Ivy League history for career points by passing Yale's Sue Johnson (1982-86). The senior forward also finished with nine rebounds and two assists.
Megan LeDuc tallied 17 points, six rebounds, four assists and one steal, while
Nicholle Aston chipped in 14 points and nine boards.
Kerri Moran rounded out the double-digit scorers with 11 points to go along with eight assists, one steal and one blocked shot.
Yale (10-9, 1-5 Ivy) was led by Lena Munzer's career-high 25 points, while Roxy Barahman chipped in 11.
The Big Red shot .464 percent overall (26-56) and a solid .444 percent from 3-point range (8-18), while holding Yale to .390 from the floor (23-59) and a mere .250 percent from beyond the arc (5-20).
The Big Red's offense clicked throughout the game, assisting on 18-of-26 baskets. Yale, on the other hand, assisted on just 6-of-23.
Aston and Marshall set the tone early for Cornell, combining for 10 points as the visitors jumped out to a 13-3 lead at the 5:13 mark. Yale closed the gap with an 8-1 run, but Cornell scored the final seven points of the quarter, including four straight from Aston to take the 21-12 lead into the first break.
LeDuc opened the second quarter with a steal and a finish at the other end to push the Big Red's lead back to double-digits (23-12) and a trey from Moran at the 4:16 mark gave Cornell its largest lead of the quarter, 35-23. Munzer scored the final five points of the quarter, but the Big Red still took a 38-31 lead into halftime.
Cornell scored the first 12 points of the third quarter, including consecutive treys from
Taylor DePalma, who finished with nine points, to go up by 19 with under five minutes gone. Yale finally got its first bucket of the quarter on a layup from Munzer at the 4:02 mark, but a quick inbounds led to a fastbreak layup from
Maddy Reed on the other end to maintain the 19 point lead. Yale responded with eight unanswered, including six from Munzer to cut Cornell's lead to 52-41 at the final break.
The teams traded buckets to open the fourth quarter before 12 straight Cornell points, including six consecutive from Marshall, put Cornell up, 66-47, with 5:04 to play. The Bulldogs responded once again with a 10-2 run, but a tough elbow jumper from LeDuc with just over one minute to play all but sealed the 76-63 victory.
The Big Red returns home for the first time in nearly a month when it welcomes Princeton and Penn to Newman Arena. Cornell will host the Tigers on
Athlete Ally Night on Friday, Feb. 10 at 6 p.m., before welcoming the Quakers for the team's annual Play 4 Kay at the Pink Zone game on Saturday, Feb. 11 at 5 p.m.
