FAIRFAX, Va. – George Mason's first four batters scored, then a fifth-inning grand slam extended the lead in the baseball team's 11-4 loss on Saturday at Spuhler Field.
For a fourth time in the team's first five games, freshman Kaleb Lepper led off the game by reaching base and scoring the game's first run. His walk was followed by junior
Ellis Bitar's RBI triple to right-center field, and Cornell (3-2) jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead.
George Mason (6-9) responded with four runs in the first and the Big Red stranded six runners over the first four innings, which proved costly with the home side blowing the game open with three runs in the fourth and a grand slam in the fifth to make the score 11-1.
Cornell's final three runs came in the eighth inning, with junior
Dale Wickham — who extended his hit streak to five games — scoring on senior
Cole Rutherford's double down the line in left. Senior
Frankie Padulo drove in the next run, the scored on Lepper's two-out double.
The teams are scheduled to play the rubber game of the three-game series at 1 p.m. Sunday.
