Men's Polo

Polo Second At Regionals, Eye At-Large National Invites

ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Cornell men's and women's polo teams will wait to see if they receive at-large invitations to the USPA collegiate national championships after both squads dropped one-goal contests in the finals of the Northeast Regionals on Sunday at Oxley Equestrian Center.

The top-seeded me started off the day against Roger Williams. The first chukker was a battle and Cornell had to come from behind to tie it at 4-4. The second showed what would be Cornell's struggle for the day, being unable to find the goal or have the luck of the bounce. RWU caught some really good bounces and went into halftime with a five-goal lead. Cornell managed to draw to within four by the end of the third, but the same issue of bad bounces and just missing the goal plagued the Big Red. The fourth saw more of the same, but Cornell edged closer and pulled to within one at 15-14 with just under a minute to go. Again several shots just missed or hit a leg on the way to goal and the Big Red dropped the contest. Ignacio Masais earned All-Northeast Honors and Cornell's horses won Best Pony and Best String.

The second-seeded women followed up by playing top-seeded UConn. The match was very similar to the men's game as the Big Red fell behind early in the first and recovered to trail by one after the first chukker. The second saw Cornell's opponent pull out and lead by four goals at the half. The third was a frustrating affair as the Big Red controlled most of the chukker, had several chances to score, but in the end could draw no closer heading into the fourth trailing 10-5. The Big Red did not give up though and scored a couple of quick goals to pull within two at 10-8. The Huskies scored and pulled out to three goals again, but Cornell was not finished. It fought back to within 12-11 with under 30 seconds, then earned a foul while driving to goal with 11 seconds left. Cornell converted to tie the game at 12-12 and sent the match to a shootout. It took two rounds, but Connecticut was able to earn the title. Both Shariah Harris and Emma Eldredge earned Northeast All-Star honors.
