Box Score RICHMOND, Va. — Sophomore
Will Simoneit hit a home run in his first collegiate start and the baseball team stormed out to a six-run lead Friday, but Richmond stormed back for an 8-7 victory in 10 innings during the first day at the Spider Invitational at Pitt Field.
For a second straight game, Cornell (4-3) got hits from each of its nine starting batters. Junior Ryan Krainz had his second three-hit game of the season, and the Big Red built a 6-0 lead by the middle of the second inning before eventually ending up with a season-high 15 hits. Richmond (7-9) forced an extra inning with back-to-back home runs in the bottom of the ninth, then pushed across the winner after a walk, sacrifice bunt, intentional walk and a base hit up the middle.
The Big Red continued its trend of striking first, plating two in the first on four singles. Freshman Kaleb Lepper and senior
Tommy Wagner got on base and scored on base hit by junior
Dale Wickham and junior
Pierre Le Dorze.
Cornell then stretched its lead to 6-0 in the second. Baur hit a double to right with the bases loaded to bring in two runs, then Rutherford hit another two-run double later in the inning with one out.
Richmond stuck around with a three-run home run in the bottom the second, then the Spiders cut their deficit to 6-5 with single runs in the fourth and sixth.
Simoneit's homer to center field in the top of the ninth put Cornell up by two before Richmond's final surge.
The Big Red continues play at the three-day event at 10 a.m. Saturday, when it takes on Campbell.
