#20 Men's Tennis Readies For Pivotal Match vs. #25 Columbia

NEW YORK — The Ivy League season for men's tennis runs through the first four weekends of April, but the team to beat will be determined after Cornell and Columbia tangle in a matchup of national top-25 teams at 1 p.m. Saturday at Dick Savitt Tennis Center. The match will be broadcast on the Ivy League Digital Network here.

Cornell (15-2) has enjoyed a remarkable run through the non-league portion of its schedule, highlighted by a stunning road upset of then-No. 7 Oklahoma on March 12. The Big Red then punctuated its strong start with its fourth 4-3 victory of the season last Saturday, when freshman Pietro Rimondini and senior Bernardo Casares Rosa forced and won a third set in their singles matches from the bottom two positions to lift Cornell over visiting Drake. The Big Red now sits 20th in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's national rankings.

Senior Colin Sinclair remains undefeated in singles play, now standing at a perfect 12-0 from the middle two positions in the order. Casares Rosa (10-1) and Rimondini (9-1) are nearly unscathed from the lower positions, and freshman Lev Kazakov and sophomore David Volfson have buoyed the top of the order. Cornell is also 10-3 from the top spot in doubles.

A few places below the Big Red rests 25th-ranked Columbia (11-3), the three-time defending champion of the Ivy League and one of just two teams to knock off Cornell this season. That meeting came back on Feb. 19 in the finals of the ECAC Indoor Championships at Princeton, with the Lions emerging on the better side of a 4-1 score and the two unfinished matches in the third set. It was Columbia's fifth straight victory over Cornell to improve to 55-40-1 all-time in the series. The Big Red's last victory against the Lions came in the finals of the ECAC Indoor Championships in Fall 2012.

Columbia breezed past Bryant, 7-0, its last time out on Sunday. The Lions' three losses have all been to teams currently in the top 20 (No. 6 Texas, No. 8 Oklahoma State and No. 18 Michigan). Columbia has three players ranked nationally in singles, led by No. 72 Victor Pham and his 7-3 record. He is typically joined in the top two spots in the order with 101th-ranked Shawn Hadavi, who is 9-3 and on a six-match winning streak. Jackie Tang is often found at the No. 3 position, ranked 90th and 7-2 in dual matches. The Pham brothers, Richard and Victor, are currently ranked 19th in the country and were semifinals in the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships in the fall.
