POTSDAM, N.Y. – #3 Clarkson scored a power-play goal 7:59 into the first period that stood up for the remaining 52:01 of the ECAC Hockey Championship game, giving the Golden Knight's their first-ever tournament title with the 1-0 victory over the #7 women's hockey team at Cheel Arena on Sunday afternoon.
In the third title clash between the two squads, it took just 1:02 for Cornell to earn a power-play opportunity, but the Big Red was unable to do anything with the man-advantage
. Soon after, Cornell did get a quality look towards goal when
Brianna Veerman fed
Kristin O'Neill in the slot but the freshman's wrister went wide right.
Clarkson earned a power-play opportunity 6:49 into the first period and, despite two big left pad saves and freezes from Voorheis in the early going of the penalty, Clarkson was able to get one past her when the puck found Rhyen McGill for a tap-in at the left post.
Voorheis continued to keep Cornell in the opening period, fighting off shot after shot with her blocker and shoulders, as the Knights offense kept firing high on the senior net minder. The Big Red defense did the dirty work, too, to keep the deficit at one heading into the break. Both
Grace Graham and O'Neill had crucial clearances on loose pucks in the crease with Clarkson pushing numbers up to crash around Voorheis.
It was just the first time in its seventh championship game appearance that Cornell trailed at the end of the first period.
For the second period in a row, the Big Red earned a power-play less than 65 seconds in but – for the second period in a row – was unable to capitalize on the opportunity but did outshoot the Golden Knights 5-1 in the first 6:30 of the second period.
Seconds after the penalty-kill unit of
Hanna Bunton,
Sarah Knee, O'Neill and
Micah Hart withstood the entirety of a Clarkson power-play, Cornell againt got a chance of its own but O'Neill and
Kaitlin Doering's whacks at a loose puck in the low slot were unable to go in the right direction. Cornell outshot Clarkson, 8-4, in the second but it was the theme of the game – opportunities generated but connections not quite made – that sent Cornell into the final break trailing by one.
On the season, Cornell entered the game 0-3-2 when trailing after two periods and despite pressuring the Clarkson defense over the final 10 minutes of the game - with sophomore
Diana Buckley and Bunton both finding each other for quality looks - that situational record moved to 0-4-2.
Voorheis – who stopped a breakaway bid with 2:00 to play – finished with 23 saves for Cornell (20-7-5) while Tiley stopped 17 pucks in the shutout bid for Clarkson (29-4-5).
The co-captain Hart was named to the ECAC All-Tournament Team, as voted by the media.
Cornell's season can still continue if the team is given one of the four at-large bids in tonight's 9 p.m. NCAA selection show.
