#26 Men's Tennis Looks to Clinch Second Ivy League Title

ITHACA, N.Y. — The men's tennis team will be looking for its first Ivy League title since 2010 this weekend, where it has to clinch at least a share of the championship if it can win both of its matches at Reis Tennis Center against Yale at 1 p.m. Saturday and Brown at 1 p.m. Sunday. The match against the Bulldogs will also serve as the Big Red's Senior Day, in which it will honor the final weekend of home matches for Big Red's five elder statesmen.

Cornell (19-3, 4-1 Ivy League) is riding a four-match winning streak after a pair of road victories last weekend at Dartmouth and Harvard. The Crimson upset Columbia on Saturday, which then allowed the Big Red to join those two atop the league standings after its 4-2 win Sunday at Harvard's Beren Tennis Center. Junior Daniel Grunberger had the clinching point at No. 6 singles.

The Big Red has won the Ivy League title once since the circuit started sponsoring men's tennis in 1999, winning the championship outright in 2011. Cornell, Columbia (15-4, 4-1) and Harvard (16-9, 4-1) all have two matches remaining this weekend. The Lions also host Brown and Yale this weekend, and the Crimson will travel to Princeton and Penn.

If all three teams sweep their respective weekends, they would all officially share the Ivy League title and tie-breaking procedures would then be employed to determine which school receives the league's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. Columbia would hold the advantage in tiebreakers against Cornell or against Cornell and Harvard; Cornell would hold the advantage against Harvard; and Harvard would hold the advantage against Columbia. If Cornell, Columbia and Harvard all lose at least one match this weekend, then Princeton (12-11, 2-2) can re-enter contention.

But regardless of the outcome of the Ivy League race, the Big Red remains in favorable position to secure an at-large bid the NCAA tournament should it not secure that automatic berth. Cornell slipped one spot in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association national rankings this week, but it still sits in 26th.

Cornell continues to find its domination from the lower two-thirds of the singles order, where it has a combined 54-10 records from the Nos. 3, 4, 5 and 6 positions. Freshman Lev Kazakov is now 12-5 on the season and moved up the national rankings to 101st in singles this week, and classmate Pietro Rimondini is on an 11-match winning streak from primarily the No. 5 spot. Senior Colin Sinclair leads the team in singles victories with a 14-3 record, having competed at No. 1 the last four matches. Sinclair has also recently been paired with senior Chris Vrabel in doubles, with the tandem going 3-0 in matches at No. 1 and currently holding down a national ranking of 79th.

Yale (16-7, 2-4) stemmed a three-match losing streak with a 4-1 victory on Sunday against Penn. Tyler Lu holds down the top spot in singles, where he is 16-2, ranked 63rd nationally and a perfect 5-0 in Ivy League matches. Ziqi Wang is 13-4 from primarily the No. 2 position, though two of his losses have come in league play. Dylan King is 17-3, typically competing at No. 3.

Brown (11-9, 0-5) has dropped its last four matches, though the doubles team of Gregory Garcia and Lucas Da Silveira are ranked 44th nationally. Jack Haworth is 14-6 from the top half of the singles lineup, and Jacob Walker is 13-3 from the lower half. Da Silveira has steadily worked his way up the lineup, starting dual season at No. 6 and having competed at No. 1 last weekend.

Both of this weekend's matches are free to attend and open to the public. There will be a Senior Day ceremony on Saturday, where Cornell will honor seniors Isaiah Brilhante, Dylan Brown, Bernardo Casares Rosa, Colin Sinclair and Chris Vrabel.
