TOWSON, Md. – Junior
Trey Baur had six hits, senior
Tommy Wagner and sophomore
Will Simoneit both hit grand slams, and the baseball team broke through in a big way on Wednesday in a 27-14 victory over Towson at Schuerholz Park.
Baur's six-hit effort is the first in Big Red program history, breaking a feat of five accomplished 14 previous times — most recently in 2013 by Matt Hall. Cornell's total output of 27 runs was the most for the program since 1903, when it defeated Rochester by a score of 27-0.
For the third time this season, Cornell (11-9) got hits from all nine of its starting batters. The Big Red's lead stood at 8-2 halfway through the third, but Towson (10-15) answered with five runs in the bottom half of the frame.
Simoneit pulled the Big Red's lead to a more comfortable margin of 13-7 after his grand slam in the fourth inning. It was Cornell's first grand slam since Ryan Karl hit one on March 26, 2014 at James Madison — but it would only be a matter of three innings before the feat was matched again. This time, it was Wagner clearing the bases with his first home run of the season in the seventh inning.
The Big Red had a season-high four home runs on the day, starting with senior
Frankie Padulo's second of the season in the second inning and Baur's three-run home run in the ninth. It was his first career home run and gave him the aforementioned record for most hits by a Cornell batter in a single game.
Senior
Cole Rutherford and junior
Pierre Le Dorze were both 4-for-7, and Baur, Wagner and Simoneit had five RBI apiece.
Senior
Jamie Flynn earned his first victory with the Big Red, working 1.2 innings of scoreless relief. He was one of six Big Red pitchers deloyed.
Cornell returns to Ivy League play this weekend with its final interdivisional contests of the year. The Big Red visits Harvard for a doubleheader at noon Sunday, then treks north for a twin bill Sunday at Dartmouth.
