SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Syracuse used one big inning to claim a rain-shortened 6-2 victory over Cornell on Tuesday afternoon at Skytop Softball Stadium in the season final for both teams. The Big Red closed its campaign with a 13-28-1 record, while the Orange improved to 31-18 in the five-inning victory.
Madeline Avery was 2-for-3 with a double and drove in both runs, while
Tori Togashi also had a hit. Lisa nelson took the hard-luck loss, allowing two hits and a run in two innings, striking out two to close her rookie campaign. Senior
Jessica Bigbie, playing in her final collegiate game, walked and scored a run.
Alicia Hansen was 3-for-3 with a pair of RBI for the Orange and Jessica Heese hit a home run as part of a 2-for-3 day. All-America candidate Sydney O'Hara was 1-for-1 with two walks and also threw a scoreless inning in the circle. Alexa Romero picked up the win, going 4.0 innings and allowing just two hits and both Big Red runs.
Heese homered to left with one out in the second to put the Orange omn the board before plating a run on an RBI single up the middle by Faith Cain. The home team opened it up with a four-run fourth, loading the bases for what would eventually be a two-run single by Hansen. The Orange went on to score two more on wild pitches
The Big Red got two runs back in the visitor half of the fifth on a
Madeline Avery two-run double after a pair of walks. The rains came shortly after, making for an unplayble field and the game was halted after five frames.
