Women’s Basketball Announces 2017-18 Newcomers

ITHACA, N.Y. – Dayna Smith, The Rebecca Quinn Morgan '60 Head Coach of Women's Basketball has announced that five student-athletes will join the Big Red for the upcoming 2017-18 season. The group, which includes one transfer student, hails from four different states and boasts two forwards, two guards, and one student-athlete that can play either position.

#24 Ariana Abdulmassih – 6-2 – Guard/Forward

Prior To Cornell
• Played a combined four seasons for Convent of the Sacred Heart High School, and Saint Ignatius College Preparatory.
• 2017 McDonald's All-American Nominee.
• Saint Ignatius team captain (2016-17).
• Was selected to play in the 2017 City All-Star Game.
• Helped Saint Ignatius to the 2015-16 Division 2 CCS Championship.
• Participated in the Bay Area Pro-Am (2013-2015).
• Named Honorable Mention All-Metro (2014, 2015)
• Member of the Cal-Hi Sports Top-40 Players (2016, 2017)
• Played for the Golden City AAU, serving as team captain from 2014-16.
• Listed among ESPNW HoopGurlz Top 100, with a Scout's Grade of 88.

Smith on Abdulmassih: "Ari is as versatile as they come on the perimeter. We are thrilled to add her length and multi-faceted scoring abilities to our roster this coming year. She is a very capable 3-point threat that is not afraid to put the ball on the floor or utilize her size in the paint if necessary. We are excited to work with her and we believe she will add a new dimension to our lineup this season!"
 
#32 Laura Bagwell-Katalinich – 6-0 – Guard
(Penn / Academy of the Holy Angels) Minneapolis, Minn.

Prior to Cornell
• Played in three games for Penn during the 2016-17 season.
• Earned four varsity letters in basketball at the Academy of the Holy Angels.
• Two-time team captain.
• McDonald's All-America nominee (2016).
• Unanimous Tri-Metro Player of the Year (2016).
• Nominated for Ms. Minnesota Basketball (2016).
• Minnesota Girls Basketball All-Star (2016).
• All-State second-team (2016).
• Averaged 30.0 points and 12.5 rebounds per game as a senior.
• Registered 1,886 career points, good for second in school history.
• Earned three all-conference honors.
• Was a two-time team MVP.
• Helped Lead Academy of the Holy Angels to a 25-5 overall record in 2016 and a AAA State Championship, Section 3AAA Championship and Tri-Metro Conference Championship.
• Named to the Minnesota Class AAA All-Tournament team for her play during the state tournament, in which she averaged 22.7 points and 15 rebounds.
• Led the team to an undefeated 11-0 record in conference play during the 2015-16 season.
• Played club basketball for the Minnesota Crossfire.
• Also lettered in cross country, track and tennis.
• Named all-conference in cross country, as well as track.
• Set the school record for the 800-meter.
 
Smith on Bagwell-Katalinich: "We are thrilled to add Laura to our roster in 2017-18. Though she won't be able to compete on game day due to NCAA transfer regulations, we are looking forward to having her work ethic and experience in practice every day. She plays with a high-motor effort and is a versatile face-up small forward that can score in a variety of ways and defend out of her area. Our staff is excited to have the opportunity work with her this year!"
 
#14 Elodie Furey – 6-2 – Forward
(The Episcopal Academy) Villanova, Pa.

Prior to Cornell
• Earned four varsity letters in basketball for The Episcopal Academy.
• Was named the 2016-17 Interac League Most Valuable Players.
• A two-time first-team Interac League selection.
• Was a three-time All Delaware County honoree, including a first-team selection as a senior.
• Led Episcopal Academy in scoring as a junior.
• Won the school's Mind, Body, Spirit Prize for basketball, given to the athlete who excels in the classroom, makes the most impact on the court, and is a leader in the community.
• Also played soccer and lacrosse for Episcopal Academy.
 
Smith on Furey: "Elodie's athleticism, length and nose for the ball will add depth to our frontcourt this season. Her ability to run the floor and score on the break will definitely fit well within our style of play! She is fearless on the glass and on the defensive end of the floor, and we are looking forward to implementing her skill-set and determination into our system."
 
#22 Halley Miklos – 6-1 – Forward
(Liberty Common High School) Fort Collins, Colo.

Prior to Cornell
• Earned four varsity letters in basketball at Liberty Common High School.
• Served as team captain in each of her final three seasons.
• Named the 2017 Colorado 3A Player of the Year
• Was a four-time first-team all-conference selection.
• Led her team to the Great 8 in the Colorado 3A State Championships as a freshman and as a senior.
• Selected to play in The Show, Colorado's top-20 player game
• Chosen to play in the 2017 Colorado Coaches of Girls Sports All-State team, and the 2017 Colorado High School Coaches Association All-State Game
• Named her team's MVP all four seasons.
• Selected the Liberty Common High School female athlete of the year as a senior.
• Played for the BC Denver AAU team.
• Also lettered once in volleyball at Liberty Common High School.
 
Smith on Miklos: "Halley's abilities to stretch the defense as a small forward will be a tremendous asset to our frontcourt in 2017-18. She comes to us after finishing her senior season as the leading scorer in the state of Colorado, and we believe her presence will be felt immediately. She is a dynamic, hard-nosed and heady forward capable of scoring in a variety of ways. Her length and determination on the defensive end of the floor and her overall knack for rebounding will be a welcome addition to our forward core this year!"
 
#3 Kate Sramac – 5-8 – Guard
(Mount Lebanon High School) Mount Lebanon, Pa.

Prior to Cornell
• Earned three varsity letters in basketball at Mount Lebanon High School.
• Served as team captain as a senior.
• Named first-team All-Quad A Section 4 as a junior and senior.
• Led Mt. Lebanon to a Section Championship (2017), the Final 4 of the WPIAL (2017), and a Sweet 16 PIAA state playoff berth (2017).
• Selected to play in the 2017 Roundball Classic All-Star game.
• Was the 3-Point Shooting Champion at the 2017 Roundball Classic.
• Named the Almanac Female Athlete of the Year (2017)
• Selected to the Almanac Elite Eleven basketball team (2017).
• Voted Mt. Lebanon High School Class of 2017 Most Athletic Girl.
• Also lettered twice in lacrosse and played hockey for three seasons.
• Helped the Mount Lebanon High School lacrosse team win two sectional championships (2016, 2017), the 2016 WPIAL Championship, and advance to the PIAA State semifinal.
• Named first-team All-Section Class 3A Lacrosse in 2017 and was an All-WPIAL selection that same season.

Smith on Sramac: "Kate is a hard-nosed penetrating guard that can create for others. She has very good court vision, and a quick pull-up jumper from midrange that makes her tough to guard. She has great instincts on the floor and a dynamic athleticism she's developed from playing three sports the majority of her high school career. We are very excited to have Kate in our backcourt this season!"
