Women’s Basketball Announces 2017-18 Schedule

2017-18 Women's Basketball Schedule

ITHACA, N.Y. – Dayna Smith, The Rebecca Quinn Morgan '60 Head Coach of Women's Basketball, has announced the team's schedule for the upcoming 2017-18 season. The slate features 13 home games, as well as a second straight road trip to ACC power Pitt.

The 2017-18 campaign opens with a pair of road games as Cornell travels to Loyola and Pitt on Friday, Nov. 10 and Monday, Nov. 13, respectively. Last season, the Big Red downed the Greyhounds, 59-50, earning its third consecutive victory in the series to take the 3-2 lead all-time. Cornell faced the Panthers for the first-time in program history a year ago, with Pitt taking the 56-44 victory.

Six of the next seven games come at home, beginning with Colgate at Newman Arena on Thursday, Nov. 16, before welcoming Lehigh on Monday, Nov. 20. The Big Red holds a 22-15 lead in the all-time series with the Raiders, having won 10 of the last 11 contests against the Patriot League foe, including last season's 70-57 victory. The Mountain Hawks own the 4-2 lead in the all-time series but the teams haven't met since the 2002-03 season.

The lone road trip during the seven-game stretch sends the team to nearby Canisius for a contest on Wednesday, Nov. 22. Last season, Cornell snapped a four-game skid in the series, but the Griffs still own the 7-2 lead all-time.

The home stand resumes with games vs. Lafayette (Nov. 28), Stony Brook (Dec. 1), Oakland (Dec. 16) and Binghamton (Dec. 18). Cornell hasn't faced the Leopards since the 2007-08 season when its 71-56 victory gave it the 8-7 lead in the series. The Seawolves earned a hard fought, 66-65 overtime victory a year ago to improve to 3-1 in the all-time series, but a win over the Bearcats, a series-best fourth in a row for Cornell, evened the series at 8-8. The Grizzlies won the only meeting between the two teams, 56-45, in the 2010-11 season.

After nearly a month at home, Cornell will hit the road for seven consecutive games, beginning with a contest at Drexel on Thursday, Dec. 21. The Dragons escaped Newman with a 63-53 win a year ago to remain a perfect 7-0 all-time against the Big Red.

After the holiday break, Cornell will travel to New Hampshire (Dec. 29) and UMass-Lowell (Dec. 31). The Big Red earned its first win in the series with the Wildcats a year ago (4-1), but have never faced the River Hawks, a program which moved to Division I prior to the 2013-14 season.

Cornell opens the 2018 portion of the schedule with its final non-conference game at NJIT on Wednesday, Jan. 3. The Big Red is unbeaten in the series (2-0) but have not faced the Highlanders since the 2007-08 season.

Ivy League play begins at Penn and Princeton on Friday, Jan. 12 and Saturday, Jan. 13, respectively. The reigning Ivy League champion Quakers hold the all-time series lead, 55-22, but the Big Red have won 12 of the last 22 meetings with Penn. The Tigers also have a commanding 53-21 advantage overall, but the Big Red snapped a series-high 17-game Princeton winning streak a season ago, defeating the Tigers on their home court.

The extended road trip wraps up the following weekend when the team travels to Columbia on Saturday, Jan. 20, before welcoming the Lions to Newman Arena for the return trip on Saturday, Jan. 27. Both games will be played as double-headers with the men's programs. Last season, the Big Red won both games against the Lions for its seventh sweep in the series under Coach Smith to improve to 48-24 all-time.

After the brief stop in Ithaca, Cornell will head back on the road to Dartmouth (Feb. 2) and Harvard (Feb. 3), before wrapping up the first half of conference play at home against Brown (Feb. 9) and Yale (Feb. 10).

Dartmouth has historically been successful in the series, with a 56-20 record against the Big Red. However, since Cornell snapped an 11-game Big Green winning streak during the 2007-08 season, Cornell has gone 13-9, including a series split in each of the past three seasons. The Crimson has also controlled the series since the beginning, leading the Big Red 66-12, including a perfect 37-0 in contests played in Cambridge. However, Cornell earned a split a year ago and five of Harvard's last six wins have come by less than six points, including one contest in overtime.

The Bears dominated the Big Red early on, with Cornell winning only three times prior to the 1994-95 season. Since that time, Brown has just a slim 24-22 lead, as compared to its 51-25 advantage overall. The Bears won both games a year ago, but Cornell has won six of the last 10 meetings. Cornell swept the Bulldogs last season, winning both games against Yale in a season for the first time since the 2008-09 campaign. The Bulldogs hold the 48-26 lead overall, but since 2000, Cornell leads the series, 18-16.

The second half of Ivy League play begins at Newman Arena vs. Princeton (Feb. 16) and Penn (Feb. 17), before a trip to Yale (Feb. 23) and Brown (Feb. 24).

The regular season will conclude at home as the Big Red honors the Class of 2018 vs. Harvard (March 2) and Dartmouth (March 3).
