Field Hockey To Weekend In New England, Faces Vermont, No. 24 Maine

ITHACA, N.Y. -- After opening the season with a pair of nailbiting, 1-0 shutout wins, the Cornell field hockey team will attempt to continue its unbeaten streak when it heads to New England this weekend for a pair of non-conference matchups. The Big Red will visit Vermont on Saturday, Sept. 9 at 1 p.m. at Moulton Winder Field, then meets No. 24 Maine exactly 24 hours on the same field in a neutral site contest.

The Big Red scored the lone two goals of opening weekend victories over Ohio and Bucknell, allowing a total of just four shots on goal and 10 shots total over the two contests. Goalkeepers Kelly Johnson and Maddie Henry have split the two contests, with Johnson making a save and picking up the win over Ohio, while Henry has tallied three second half stops and was credited with the victory over the Bison. The defense

The offense, despite missing the presence of two-time all-region and three-time All-Ivy selection Krysten Mayers, generated just enough chances to post its second consecutive 2-0 start. That was also the last time the Big Red posted consecutive shutouts.

Dating back to last season, the Cornell field hockey team has won six consecutive games, the longest winning streak by the Big Red since winning seven straight early in the 2014 campaign. A pair of wins this weekend would extend the stretch to eight, the longest since Cornell also won eight straight spanning the 2008 and 2009 seasons.

Extending the win streak will be a challenge, as both Vermont and Maine pose different, but significant, challenges.

The Catamounts are 7-4 on their home field over the last two seasons and won seven contests a year ago, surpassing the total from the previous two years. Head coach Kate Pfeifer has the team on the doorstep of a breakthrough, as her team already has wins over Siena and Central Michigan and single goal losses on the road to No. 22 UMass and Michigan State. Landon warren has a team-best four goals, while Carla Godsman has a goal and four assists. Lena Benwood has played every minute in goal, posting a 1.66 goals against average and a .750 save percentage.

The Black Bears, coming off a 13-7 campaign and off to a 4-1 start, have won four straight, outscoring opponents 22-4 over that span. After opening the year with a 1-0 loss at Providence, Maine responded with a 3-1 win over Quinnipiac, a 12-1 drubbing of Bryant and 3-1 and 4-1 triumphs at Richmond. Libby Riedl leads an offense averaging 4.4 goals per game with five goals and five assists (15 points), making her one of six players with multiple goals on the year. Both Brianna Ricker and Samantha Wagg have been credited with three goals and three assists (nine points). Emma Cochran has played a majority of the minutes in goal and has posted a 0.89 goals against average and a .789 save percentage. Head coach Josette Babineau, a former Cornell assistant coach (2004-07) under the Big Red's Donna Hornibrook, was named NFHCA Regional Coach of the Year and has posted a 106-73 career record.
