Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Angello Strikes Twice in #4/4 Men's Hockey Shutout of Colgate

ITHACA, N.Y. – Junior forward Anthony Angello scored a pair of goals, and freshman goaltender Matthew Galajda took care of the rest with a 24-save shutout in the Cornell men's hockey team's 2-0 victory over Colgate on Friday night at Lynah Rink.

Now with six goals in his last seven games, Angello's first strike came just 2 minutes, 40 seconds into the game for fourth-ranked Cornell (15-2-1, 9-1-1 ECAC Hockey). Junior forward Mitch Vanderlaan earned his 10th assist of the season on the play, giving him five points over the last three games.

"A big thing Coach talked about this year was following the process," Angello said. "It comes down to a daily focus, attention to detail, doing all the little things right. If we have an outstanding performance, a couple bad bounces and we lose, Coach is happier with that than getting a win but not having a very good game."

After holding 19th-ranked Colgate (10-9-4, 6-4-1) largely at bay through the first period, Cornell extended the lead just 43 seconds into the second. Angello's redirection of a shot/pass from sophomore defenseman Yanni Kaldis gave the Big Red an insurance goal. It marked just the team's second power-play goal in its last 25 opportunities, but Cornell is now 4-for-7 on the man advantage against Colgate over the last three games between the squads.

Making just his 15th collegiate start, Galajda's shutout was his fourth of the season. He was sharp to make a save on John Snodgrass' redirection from the top of the crease with less than two minutes remaining in the second period, then he snagged Paul Meyer's drive from the top of the left circle 2:49 into the third. Galajda now trails All-American David McKee by one for the program's all-time freshman shutout record.

"We had opportunities but we didn't have consistent constant pressure to wear them down," said Mike Schafer, the Jay R. Bloom '77 Head Coach of Men's Hockey. "It was one of those nights you wish you had bigger pushes. They have a good team … and a great goaltender. We have to do the same tomorrow."

The victory keeps Cornell in the national lead in winning percentage (.861), and it also moves the Big Red one point closer to ECAC Hockey leader Clarkson after the Golden Knights' wild 6-6 tie against Harvard. Cornell extended its overall unbeaten streak and series streak against Colgate to seven games (6-0-1), and it has lost just four times in its last 33 games against the Raiders.

How The Goals Were Scored:
Cornell's 1st Goal
1st period, 2:40  •  Angello 7 (Vanderlaan)  •  Cornell 1, Colgate 0
•  After a Colgate shot went wide to Galajda's left, Angello won a battle along the back boards and chipped the puck up the half wall. Vanderlaan reached out to poke it away from the path of the defender on the point and churned up ice. With little in the way of reinforcements, Vanderlaan challenged three defenders by flipping the puck into the air and cutting toward the slot. He was cut off at the pass, but drew the attention of all three defenders as the puck bounced back into the path of Angello steaming into the right circle. In alone on Point, he tucked a shot past the goalie's glove.

Cornell's 2nd Goal
2nd period, :43  •  Angello 8 (Kaldis, Donaldson) (pp)  •  Cornell 2, Colgate 0
•  Working on the man advantage, Donaldson took a shot from the top of the right circle that was blocked by Meyer – but the puck bounced out toward the center point. Kaldis was there to gather, then sent a pass toward the slot that Angello steered over Point's left shoulder and into the net.
