ITHACA, N.Y. – The No.18 Cornell men's soccer had its six-game win streak snapped by Yale in 2-1 overtime loss Saturday at Berman Field. The Big Red is now 9-3 on the season and 2-1 in Ivy League play, while the Bulldogs advanced to 5-4-3 overall and to 1-1-1 in conference play.
The Big Red struck first in the fifth minute on an
Emeka Eneli goal. The freshman received a centering pass from
Vardhin Manoj, who took the ball to the end-line before finding Eneli who was planted 15 yards away from the net. Eneli collected the pass and sent in his seventh goal of the season, a mark leads the Ivy League.
"I thought Yale got the better of us in the first half and they felt unfortunate to go a goal-down," said head coach
John Smith. "So when they tied it up, I thought they did deservedly so. I thought we had the better of the second half -- we just didn't capitalize on opportunities that we had."
With time winding down in the first half, Yale knotted the game at one off a header from Jeremy Haddock. The goal was set up on a free kick after a Cornell foul.
In the second half, the Big Red had several opportunities to regain the lead, but were unable to put the ball in the back of the net.
Cornell's best opportunity came in the 79th minute when
John Scearce, who was falling down, was able to aim a shot in the direction of the goal from the ground. The ball hit off the crossbar and stayed in the air for a few instances and on the way down
Charles Touche sent a header just over the crossbar.
In the 97th minute Yale Kyle Kenagy sent in the game winner from just inside the 18-yard box.
The Big Red returns to action next weekend when it takes on Brown at 3 p.m. Saturday in Providence, Rhode Island.
