PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Freshman forward
Evanthia Spyredes scored her first collegiate goal in the 11th minute, but Brown rallied past the women's soccer team for a 3-1 victory on Sunday afternoon in an Ivy League contest at Stevenson-Pincince Field.
Spyredes' goal was the first for Cornell (1-11-1, 0-5 Ivy League) since Sept. 22 at Columbia – and just like that contest, it gave the Big Red an early lead on the road in a league game. Also like that goal against the Lions, Spyredes' goal came on a header off corner-kick service. This time, it was
Carolyn Ruoff earning the assist with a corner from the left side, and Spyredes' header caromed off a defender and inside the near post.
But Brown (6-7-1, 2-3) rallied to run its unbeaten streak in the head-to-head series to 10 games. The Bears equalized on an own goal on a free kick from the left side about five minutes from halftime, then it took the lead for good on a pair of penalty-kick goals from Abby Carchio in the 52nd and 89th minutes.
Meghan Kennedy made seven saves in the loss for Cornell.
Kaili Gregory and
Kennedy Yearby had the Big Red's other two shots on goal.
Cornell returns home to play its final two games against Princeton (2 p.m. Saturday) and Dartmouth (2 p.m. Nov. 3).
