Volleyball Rallies From 0-2 Deficit, Tops Brown

ITHACA, N.Y. -- Down 2-0, the Cornell volleyball team dominated the rest of the way and rallied past Brown 3-2 on Friday evening at Newman Arena. The Big Red remained unbeaten in Ivy League play (9-5, 4-0 Ivy) with a 20-25, 22-25, 25-17, 25-15, 15-8 victory, while the Bears (8-6) fell to 1-3 in conference matches.

The Big Red tightened up its passing and its defense over the final three sets, limiting the Bears to -.067 hitting and collecting 10 blocks, including an impressive eight in the fourth set. Six different Cornell players had at least six kills, led by Madison Baptiste (career-high 15 kills, seven digs, three blocks) and Jillienne Bennett (12 kills, three digs, three blocks). Samanta Arenas had nine kills and 10 digs and Lily Barber had a match-best 19 digs. Jenna Phelps was a presence at the net with seven kills and eight blocks, while Zoe Chamness had three kills, 42 assists, seven digs and three blocks for the home team. Cornell hit .172 for the match, including .270 in the third and fourth set to get back into the match.

Sabrina Stillwell had 15 kills and Gabrielle Moriconi notched 10 for the Bears. Makena Ehlert had 15 digs, Paris Winkler had 12 and Kristin Sellers (15) and Elisa Merten (15) combined for 33 assists.

After heading into the break trailing 2-0 and last holding a lead of any kind at 12-11 in the first set, the Big Red turned it on to quickly send it to a fifth set, surrendering just 17 and 15 points to knot the score. Cornell jumped ahead of the Bears 4-0 in the fifth and never looked back, leading by at least two points the rest of the way to win its fifth straight match, the program's longest winning streak since 2006. It's also the first time Cornell has opened an Ivy season 4-0 since 2005.

Cornell will meet perennial Ivy contender Yale (9-4, 3-1 Ivy) on Saturday, Oct. 6 at 5 p.m. at Newman Arena.
