CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — After playing Harvard to a scoreless draw in its last trip to Jordan Field, it looked like the women's soccer team would be locked in another defensive battle. But the Crimson struck early in the second half, then added an insurance tally for a 2-0 victory in an Ivy League contest on Saturday afternoon.
Leah Mohammadi set up the first goal, then scored her fifth goal of the season to pad the lead for Harvard (5-4-1, 2-0-1 Ivy League).
Meghan Kennedy made six saves in the loss for Cornell (1-8-1, 0-3), which also had two balls cleared off the line by defenders.
Evanthia Spyredes had Cornell's lone shot on target in the 27th minute while Kennedy kept the visitors even through the intermission. She aggressively charged off her line to thwart a one-on-one with Meg Tveit in the 19th minute, then the rebound sent spinning toward goal was cleared off the line by
Kaili Gregory. About 13 minutes, Kennedy collected the ball after a flurry of action on one of Harvard's 13 corner kicks.
But it didn't take long for the Crimson to strike after the half. In the 49th minute, Mohammadi sent in a cross from the left side that was headed in by Trinity Thomas. A handball in the box then led to Mohammadi's penalty-kick strikes in the 61st minute, and the hosts cruised from there.
Cornell returns to action with its non-league finale at 4 p.m. Tuesday, when it visits regional rival Colgate.
