BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Big Red field hockey team ended a two-game skid, and picked up its second consecutive win over a Patriot League foe when it downed Lehigh, 2-0, this evening at the Ulrich Sports complex. Both of Cornell's goals came in the first half and the Big Red outplayed the Mountain Hawks over the final 35 minutes to seal the victory.
The teams played a fairly even first half with each squad registering eight shots, while Lehigh had the 5-2 advantage on penalty corners. Cornell junior goalie
Maddie Henry made six stops over the first 35 minutes and the Big Red offense made the most of its chances to go up 2-0 at the break.
Cornell got on the board in the 16th minute when
Julianne Mangano drew a penalty that resulted in a penalty stroke for the visitors and
Kirsten Pienaar sent it home to take a 1-0 lead.
The Big Red extended its advantage at the buzzer when a shot by
Gabby DePetro was saved by Lehigh goalie Paige Innarella, but the rebound fell to
Taylor Gladd and the sophomore midfielder scored the first goal of her collegiate career.
After the intermission, Cornell controlled the contest to finish the game with the 18-12 advantage to shots and a 12-8 edge in shots on goal. The Mountain Hawks earned more penalty corner chances for the contest (7-4) but both teams had two corners in the second half.
Henry finished the contest with seven saves in 60:59 before giving way to
Laura Kubit, who faced just one shot but did not need to make a save. The Big Red also received a defensive save from
Kristen Ferguson in the 26th minute of action.
Cornell (3-8) will remain on the road when it travels to No. 11 Harvard for a noon contest on Saturday, Oct. 13.
