No. 18 Men’s Soccer Downs Colgate for Sixth Straight Win

HAMILTON, N.Y. – Two goals in the matter of seven minutes and seven seconds was the difference as the No. 18 Cornell men's soccer team downed Colgate (5-3-5) 2-0 Tuesday night at Beyer-Small Field. The Big Red (9-2) is now unbeaten its last 10 games against the Raiders with a record of 9-0-1 since 2009.

Cornell has now won six consecutive games, which is just the seventh time in program history the Big Red has accomplished the feat. The triumph also marks the seventh road win of the season for the Big Red which leads the nation.

Caleb McAuslan, who entered the contest with no points on the season, assisted on both of the Big Red's goals.

Emeka Eneli struck first in the 67th minute on a perfect ball from McAuslan. Eneli planted himself to the left of the net with McAuslan on the opposite side of the field. He sent the ball to Eneli who had no defenders around him and headed it past Colgate goalkeeper Jacob Harris. The tally was Eneli's third game-winning goal of the season, which ties him with Charles Touche for the team lead.

Cornell added an insurance goal from John Scearce in the 74th minute. McAuslan played the ball ahead to Scearce who strongly struck the ball past Harris.  The goal was Scearce's third of the game.

"Caleb's involvement on both goals was key," said head coach John Smith. "The first one was a lovely chip. The second one was a great little slip through from Caleb to John and fantastic finish in the bottom corner."

This marks the Ryan Shellow's third shutout of the season. The junior goalkeeper finished the game with four saves.

At the end of the first half, only three shots had been on goal. Cornell had two while the Colgate accounted for one.

"We brought the game to them in the second half," Smith said. "Whereas in the first half we were on our back feet and we didn't quite have the aggression that you when you're playing against a team that is very mature."

The Big Red returns to Ivy League action on when it hosts Yale at 4 p.m. on Saturday at Berman Field.
