ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Cornell men's swimming and diving team got its dual meet season off on the right foot, topping Dartmouth (199-99) and falling to defending Ivy champ Harvard (194-101) on Friday afternoon at Teagle Pool.
Ryan Brown had the Big Red's lone win of the night, capturing first in the 200 breast in a time of 2:05.32.He also took second in the 100 breast in 56.78, nearly a second and a half faster than the third-place swimmer. The events, owned the last four years by the Big Red's
Alex Evdokimov, highlighted a night of fast early season swims.
While Brown led the 200 breast,
Ryan Schildwachter (2:08.60) and
Slater Goodman (2:09.52) placed third and fourth overall in the event to pil up big points.
Cornell opened the meet season by taking second and fourth in the 200 medley relay, with its A team of
Dylan Curtis, Brown,
Jacob Mullin and Jack Mahoney touching in 1:31.57.
Freshman
Jake Lawson was the team's top finisher in the 1,000 free (fifth, 9:54.20), while
Koppi Kolyvek placed fourth in the 200 free (1:43.20). The Big Red's top three swimmers in the 100 back topped Dartmouth's field, with Mullin placing fourth overall in 51.78. Kolyvek also was the Big Red's top placer in the 100 free (fourth, 47.30).
James Huang finished on the podium in third place of the 200 fly (1:50.41) and was second in the 100 fly (49.60), while Mahoney sprinted to second in the 50 free, just .08 behind winner Raphael Marcoux of Harvard.
Freshman
Jameson Crandell took third in the 3-meter (277.25) and fifth in the 1-meter (248.15), both tops for Cornell.
Min Zhi Chua captured fourth in the 200 IM (1:54.40),
Van Cates was fifth in the 200 back (1:54.33) and Matt Daniel took sixth in the 500 free (4:47.46) to lead the Big Red in those races.
Cornell closed the meet with a runner-up effort in the 400 free relay.
Ricardo Martinez, Kolyvek, Mahoney and
Hunter Hitchens swam a 3:06.93, finishing behind only Harvard's top team.
The Big Red will remain at Teagle Pool for an Ivy tri-match next weekend against Penn and Princeton. The teams will dive on Friday, Nov. 16 at 5 p.m., with swimming commencing on Saturday, Nov. 17 at 3 p.m.
