ITHACA, N.Y. -- For 30 minutes, Cornell and Colgate were locked in a defensive battle, a deadlock the Raiders eventually solved while pulling away for a 73-57 win over the Big Red on Sunday afternoon at Newman Arena. Both teams are 2-1 on the season.
The Raiders shot 56 percent in the second half thanks to the passing of Jordan Burns and Tucker Richardson, who combined for 12 assists - most at the rim for layups. Burns ended the night with 14 points, eight assists and five rebounds among four double figure scorers. Will Rayman led the way with 16 points and six boards, Dana Batt chipped in 14 and Malcolm Regisford had 12. The Raiders held a 41-33 edge on the glass and limited the Big Red to 4-of-28 shooting from beyond the 3-point arc.
Senior
Matt Morgan had 12 points, 10 rebounds and four assists to lead the Big Red on a cold shooting night for his second double-double of the season.
Josh Warren was also in double figures with 10 points and five boards and
Jimmy Boeheim ended the afternoon with eight points. The Big Red shot just 14 percent from beyond the arc (4-of-28) and 41 percent from the free-throw line (7-of-17) and were outscored 54-34 in the paint.
Despite 10 turnovers and a miserable 2-of-17 shooting effort from beyond the arc in the first half, Cornell trailed by just three (31-28) thanks in large part to its own defense. The Big Red turned Colgate over seven times and hounded the Raiders into 1-of-9 shooting from 3-point range itself. Warren had six points, four rebounds, three assists and a steal against a talented Colgate frontcourt. Batt led the Raiders with nine points and four boards and Burns notched six points and five assists.
Cornell took a 35-34 lead three minutes into the second on a Warren jumper from the short corner, but six straight points by the Raiders gave the visitors the lead for good. It was still just a five-point game (44-39) with 12 minutes to play, but the Raiders went on an 15-4 run that essentially put the game away with seven minutes remaining. The home team never got closer than 11 points the rest of the way and Colgate claimed its third straight head-to-head win in the series.
