ITHACA, N.Y. — The women's tennis team returned to winning form on Sunday with a 6-1 victory over NJIT at Reis Tennis Center.
Cornell (2-2) effectively rebounded after Friday's loss to SEC contender Auburn, ranked 12th in the nation, while also improving to 5-0 in the all-time series against NJIT (1-1). But this match was more competitive than previous meetings, with five of the six singles matches needing a third set to decide a victor.
After securing the Big Red secured the doubles point, freshman
Cheyenne Lilienthal recorded the lone straight-sets victory of the day at No. 4. Cornell won the first set in three of the remaining five matches, but no other points would go on the board for a while.
Sophomore
Ananya Dua was next to win, battling back from a first-set loss to just losing two games the rest of the way to win at No. 3. Senior captain
Priyanka Shah then clinched the match by winning at love in the third set at No. 1.
Senior
Madison Stevens (No. 5) and junior
Michelle Wang (No. 6) then capped the Big Red scoring.
Up next for Cornell is a rare break from its home-heavy non-league schedule, with a trip next weekend to Princeton for the ECAC Indoor Championships. The tournament features eight teams from the region playing in a single bracket, with three matches spanning the three days.
