Men's Polo Splits Home Weekend Set

ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Cornell men's polo team split a weekend home set, as the top-ranked Big Red toppled Kentucky 22-11 before falling to the Maryland Polo Club 29-13 at Oxley Equestrian Center. The Big Red is now 10-3 on the season after having its eight-match win streak snapped on Saturday.

Morgan Palacios stepped in for an injured Ryan Saul and teamed with Lorenzo Masias and Dan Shaw to take on Kentucky, ranked second in the Southeast Region, on Friday night. The Wildcats came out on fire and took a 5-4 lead after one. Cornell settled into its roles and defensively shut down Kentucky in the second as the Big Red pulled ahead and took a 9-6 lead into the break. The third chukker saw Cornell systematically extend its  lead to 16-10 heading. Cornell controlled the fourth and took home the 22-11 win. Masias led all scorers with 12 goals.

On Saturday, the Big Red took on a Maryland Polo Club team that has had success against the Big Red in the past. MPC came out just as hot as UK had and took an 8-5 lead after the first chukker. Cornell was slow and its energy level was down, with Maryland entering halftime with a 12-8 edge. In the third the wheels fell off, with the visitors rattling off 10 goals, including three consecutive two-pointers, and ended the third ahead 24-10 before cruising to the victory

Cornell will host defending national champion and second-ranked Roger Williams on Saturday, Feb. 10 at 7:30 p.m. at Oxley Equestrian Center. The Big Red won the first meeting of the season between the teams 22-14 in the finals of the William Field Invitational on Nov. 19.
