Evdokimov Leads All-Ivy League Swimming & Diving Team

ITHACA, N.Y. -- Alex Evdokimov earned three All-Ivy honors, including first-team accolades in both the 100 and 200 breaststroke for his performance at last week's 2018 Ivy League Swimming and Diving Championship. He also captured second-team honors as part of the 200 medley relay squad along with teammates Dylan Curtis, Jacob Mullin and Jack Mahoney.

The senior from Coral Springs, Fla., registered an NCAA A cut and automatic qualifying time for the national meet in the 200 breast, touching the wall in 1:52.28 - a school, pool, meet and conference record. Runner-up Jonathan Rutter of Yale took second with what would have been a pool record in 1:55.68, but that was more than three seconds behind the Big Red senior. Evdokimov topped his own meet and school record by 1.28 seconds and lowered the pool record by an incredible 3.68 seconds. His finals time ranks third nationally this season, behind on Florida's Mark Szaranek (1:51.86) and Texas A&M's Mauro Castillo Luna (1:52.15).

The night prior, Evdokimov ripped off a school, pool and meet record in the 100 breast, becoming the first Big Red swimmer to go under 52 seconds in the process with a dominant 51.85 time in the finals. That lowered his own pool record of 52.76 set in the prelims by nearly a full second and wiped out race runner-up Daniel Chang of Harvard by almost two seconds. His own school record is more than two seconds faster than any other swimmer at Cornell.

In the process, he became the 11th four-time event winner in conference history. The three-time All-American also joined an elite list of Ivy swimmers who won four titles in more than one event - joining Yale's Alex Righi (50 and 100 free), Harvard's John Cole (500, 1000 and 1650 free in 2001-02-03-05) and the Crimson's Dan Shevchik (400 IM, 200 back in 2000-01-02-03).

He was also a part of a 200 medley relay that came out of the blocks in the very first race of the four-day meet with a huge second-place finish. Cornell finished behind only Harvard, touching in 1:26.00. That shaved 0.44 seconds off the previous school record and was just the second mark under 1:27.50 in Cornell history.
