Women's Hockey Adds Six Newcomers

ITHACA, N.Y. -- Cornell women's hockey head coach Doug Derraugh announced the addition of six freshman to the team's roster. The group includes three forwards, two defenders and a goalkeeper.
 
"We are very excited about this season," Derraugh said. "We have a strong core group returning from last year and we have added depth, talent and grit at every position with this freshman class."

Samantha Burke – F – 5-10
(Convent of the Visitation) Eden Prairie, Minn.

Prior to Cornell
  • Four-time letterwinner for Covent of the Visitation at forward.
  • Served as a captain and earned all-state accolades her senior year.
  • Earned all-conference accolades three times in 2016, 2017 and 2018.
  • Her team finished as state runners up in 2016 and 2017 and was the state consolation champions in 2018.
  • Also a four year letterwinner in soccer, which she captained her senior year and led them to a third place finish at states.
  • Earned all-state and all-conference recognition in 2016, 2017 and 2018.
 
Gillis Frechette – F – 5-6
(St. Paul's School) Waltham, Mass.

Prior to Cornell
  • Four-time letterwinner at St. Paul's School in Concord, New Hampshire, where she served as a captain her senior year.
  • Played Club for the East Coast Wizards.
  • Received an invite to the US National Camp every year she was eligible.
  • Four-time New England Prep School All-Star and New Hampshire All-State team from 2015-18.
  • Named her team's most valuable player in 2016, 2017 and 2018 and was tabbed the rookie of the year in 2015.
  • Helped lead St. Paul's to the New England Prep School Hockey Title in 2015.
  • Was a two-time recipient of the St. Paul's Girls Ice Hockey Award earning the distinction her junior and senior seasons.
  • Four-time letterwinner in both field hockey and lacrosse, each of which she captained her senior her senior year.
  • Was a three-time New England Prep School All-Star for field hockey in 2015, 2016 and 2017 and was the team's most valuable player her junior and senior year.
  • Named to the New Hampshire All-Star team in 2016 and 2017.
  • In lacrosse, was tabbed a New England Prep School All Star and the team's most valuable player her junior and senior seasons.
  • Graduated cum laude and was on the honor roll all four years.
 
Bella Kang – F – 5-7
(St. Paul's School) Los Gatos, Calif.

Prior to Cornell
  • Played three years of varsity hockey at St. Paul's School in Concord, New Hampshire.
  • Was named her team's rookie of the year in 2016.
  • St. Paul's advanced to the NEPSAC all three years she was a member of the squad.
  • Played club for the East Coast Wizards.
  • Won the U19 2017 state championship.
  • Advanced to nationals all three years.
 
Kaitlyn McKenzie – GK – 6-3
(South St. Paul High School) Hastings, Minn.

Prior to Cornell
  • Played five years of varsity hockey at South St. Paul High School, where she served as an alternate captain her junior and senior seasons.
  • Earned all-state and all-conference nods, in addition to being a finalist for the Ms. Senior Goalie of the Year Award for the 2017-18 season.
  • Named the Kaposia Classic Star of the Game four times from 2015-18.
  • Helped lead her team to a fourth place finish in the 2015 state tournament.
  • Named to the honor roll all four years of high school.
 
Taylor Pietrowski – D – 5-8
(Nichols School) Orchard Park, N.Y.

Prior to Cornell
  • Four-year member of the hockey team at the Nichols School in Buffalo.
  • Played Club for the Niagara Jr. Purple Eagles, where she won five New York State Championships and participated in five USA Hockey National Championships.
  • Captained Nichols' hockey team in 2017-18 and served as an alternate captain in 2016-17.
  • Earned four letters in golf and captained the team her junior and senior seasons.
  • Was tabbed the Western New York Winter Sport Scholar Athlete award winner.
  • In addition to being inducted to the Cum Laude Society, she was also the recipient of the AP Scholars Award.
  • Was a highest honors student.
 
Athena Song – D – 5-6
(Ames High School) Ames, Iowa

Prior to Cornell
  • Played two years of varsity hockey at the Culver Academy.
  • Was a member of the St. Louis Blues club team, which she captained the U14 squad in 2013. 
  • Three-year member of Culver's track and field team.
  • Member of the National Honor Society and was on the honor roll.
